Happy New Year from all of us at McGroarty Arts Center! It was strange to have December and January come and go at McGroarty without a local vendor or chili bowl in sight. The house is quiet, but we are hopeful for this year. McGroarty Arts Center is still closed. Since we reside on City owned property (did you know that the McGroarty House is an LA City Historic-Cultural Monument?), we cannot open until we are cleared to do so by the Los Angeles City Department of Cultural ...Affairs. We are still waiting. As soon as we have more information or can run classes again, we will be e-mailing and posting to let you all know. We miss everyone and we are eager to resume offering affordable arts education to our community as soon as we are able to do so safely. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram and/or join our e-mail list to stay abreast of any updates. We do have exciting news though! We are starting to plan and get ready for our annual ceramics show! We are committed to making this happen this year; time will tell if it will be in person, virtually, or perhaps a hybrid of the two. Please spread the word and consider entering! The last year has been a trying year for all and we never would have thought when we closed in March 2020 that we would still be closed. To Our Community, Due to the broad, adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business operations, the McGroarty Arts Center Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Annual Ceramics Juried Open Exhibition. This decision was not made lightly, however, the well-being of our artists, our customers, and our community is our highest priority. This year’s juror and featured artist, CJ Jilek, has graciously made the commitment to our postponed Exhibi...tion in June 2021, thus the theme shall remain the same. In other words, you have a whole year to work on an entry. We are devastated to postpone this year’s Exhibition, but we know it is the best decision at this time. Our hearts are so full this week at McGroarty! Thank you to everyone who braved the rain and came out last weekend to our event!!! We hope you had fun and enjoyed it! This event could not happen without a large number of volunteers. Thank you to our ceramics students and teachers who have been working for the last 6 months to make over 1,400 chili bowls! Thank you to all those who volunteered during the event! And thank you to all our chili, bake sale, and corn bread makers! ...McGroarty is a primarily volunteer led organization and it takes countless volunteer hours to make an event like this happen. THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEERS! Thank you to our community partners who helped support this event: Sunland/Tujunga Neighborhood Council, Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club, STARC, DCA, LA County Arts Commission, and Remnant University. Did the rain keep you away, but you want some chili bowls (they make great gifts!)? Have no fear; we have plenty of leftover bowls that will be available for purchase throughout the rest of December from 10am to 4pm. Can’t make that? Send us a DM to set up another time to come by.
