"DV rates going up due to lockdown again. If you are charged with DV you can never own a gun again. And you have to do a year's worth of anger management counseling, at least. If you find yourself arguing with spouse or S.O., lose the fight or walk away. If somebody calls the cops somebody is going to jail. You don’t want to roll that dice."

You do not need to take a sobriety test if you’re pulled over. However, you will need to submit to one if you’re taken into custody. This might be advantageous to you because 1. you can fight a blood sobriety test in court and 2. it gives you time to sober up and lower your BAC. We have experience with consulting for DUI cases. We recommend using this script if you’re ever pulled over for reasonable suspicion of a DUI. Finally, feel free to contact your criminal defense attorneys who will fight for you in court against any potential charges.

In light of the holiday weekend, we wanted to let our followers know about specific laws that might affect them and their families this Fourth of July weekend:

We're greatly looking forward to the holiday weekend with our families. We wanted to share a link to an LA Times article listing out places to (safely) observe fireworks this weekend. https://www.latimes.com//whats-happening-for-4th-of-july-t

Although case numbers are going down with the county reopening, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to bring awareness and protection for those affected by the domestic violence epidemic plaguing our country. https://www.nytimes.com//coronavirus-domestic-violence.html

"I’d love to say that managing a successful criminal defense firm has prepared me for fatherhood but that would be a big damn lie. Going into fatherhood I thought to myself 'You put out fires and juggle case law and facts all the time, this kid stuff is totally doable.' Wrong. Wrong and stupid. Fatherhood, however, has made me a better lawyer. It’s upped my responsibility game, given me a great new way to relate to some of my clients, and it’s taught me a level of patience previously unknown. I love both roles and I’m excited to see how my firm and my family grow with time." -Matt, Managing Partner and new father. Happy Father's Day from our families to yours!

"I was born at Soldier Hospital at West Point Military Academy. Growing up on military bases, I became very aware of military protocol that related to the flag. Every morning the base would play Reveille and raise the flag, and every evening Taps would be played as the flag was taken down. The flag was meant to be treated in a reverent manner as a symbol of the loss for those soldiers who gave their lives for freedom across the world. You can find this reverence on any military base. It is an iconic symbol of this nation and I am proud of my family history serving the flag." -Bruce McGregor, Senior Partner. Happy Flag Day from us to you! We value our veterans and their families.

Let's debunk some myths and spread some truths! From our Instagram story yesterday, we asked out followers "What's the weirdest trick you've learned to help you 'pass' a breathalyzer test?" Here are some of the responses and our answers: 1. "Mouthwash/gum"... Answer: Mouthwash has alcohol which might actually give you a higher reading! It also makes the police suspicious that you're trying to hide your intoxication. Gum, mints, and mouthwash makes your breath smell better-- but will not help with a breathalyzer test. *Additional fact: Officers are trained to notice minty breath in field training because it is such a common (and wrong) way to cover up the smell of alcohol or other substances. 2. "Ask to get a blood test instead" Answer: That's our best advice! There's no way to challenge a breathalyzer reading in court; however, there are ways to challenge a blood test! Finally, the amount of time it'll take to get the test done allows you to sober up if you're teetering on the 0.08 BAC legal driving limit level. From our Instagram Story yesterday, we asked our followers "What are the consequences for breaking curfew?" One response was "Being arrested and/or fined?" Yes, that's true. In LA County, it is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of not to exceed $1,000 or by imprisonment for a period not to exceed six months, or both, for any person, during an emergency.
