The Commands of Christ Dan Bender, Pastor to Refugee Community Introduction: Pastor's thought: "Flourishing faith in the midst of a pandemic." Key idea: It is possible to thrive by keeping our Lord's commands even during this unusual time. Obedience is how we prove our love for Christ, and no matter what the circumstances, it is possible to obey his commands. Trick question: Would Jesus have told us something to do if it was beyond our ability to accomplish? (Yes and No) Key verses: John 14.21 He that has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will manifest Myself to him." John 14.15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments." Background Information 1. What is a command / commandment? Question: "What is the difference between laws, commands, commandments, decrees, and statutes?" All four of these Hebrew words are used throughout the writings of Moses to refer to commands from God to be obeyed by God’s people. Distinctions are sometimes made regarding one word from the other, yet the overall principle is one of obedience to all that the Lord commands, whether it’s a general command, a prescribed law, a legal verdict, or a religious festival or ritual. 2. Why should we keep them? John 14.23 LOGOS Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and we will make Our home with him. 3. What are some of the benefits of keeping his commands / commandments? Blessings, peace, contentment, Christ with us and answered prayers What are some of the commands / commandments? 1. Repent turn and be sorrowful, stop sinning (OT) change your mind (NT) 2. Follow give, deny self, shine your light 3. Love God, your neighbors, your enemies 4. Forgive be reconciled, be a servant, go the second mile 5. Seek God’s kingdom, choose the narrow way, rejoice 6. Go make disciples, pray for workers, serve the poor Conclusion: Which of these commands are affected by this pandemic? Have any of these changed in the past 2,000+ years? Personal application: 1. How are YOU doing in the obedience category? 2. Which of these need more work? 3. Are you waiting and watching for his return?
