Let’s talk about negative beliefs about intrusive thoughts * * Just because you have a thought does NOT mean it’s important and does NOT mean you have to pay attention to it. Remember, thoughts are just thoughts. Thoughts are a string of words. *... Intrusive thoughts does NOT make you a bad person. Ocd is ego-dystonic meaning the thoughts do not align with your values or self concept. * If a thought shows up doesn’t necessarily mean it has or hasn’t happened. I can have a thought that I will win the lottery .but doesn’t make it more likely that it will happen. * Thought action fusion is a term associated with OCD. It’s a mistaken belief that if you have a thought about something; it’s equivalent that you will carry out the action or the thought will come true. For example, let’s say you have a thought that you will harm your child; you might believe that the thought in your head makes it more likely that you will do something wrong OR having the thought is just as bad as actually carrying out the thought. A key reminder is understanding that a thought is just a thought. Rumination is an ACTIVE process not passive. Ruminating is a behavior- thinking is a behavior. What happens when you a plant a strawberry seed? If you want the seed to grow, what does it require? * It requires soil, sunlight, and water. Right? * If you tend to it, it will grow. But what happens if you don’t tend to it?... * It will shrivel and die. * I want you to use this metaphor in relation to anxiety! I love using this example especially for health anxiety. * Focusing on body symptoms leads to increased detection of bodily noise. * The more you pay attention to a particular bodily sensation the more noticeable it becomes which leads to increased anxiety and greater body vigilance. * This only fuels the anxiety cycle! * In terms of psychoeducation, it’s important to understand homeostasis which basically means our body reacts to changes in the environment in order to function properly. A big component of treatment is helping the client change their relationship with anxiety and change their relationship with their thoughts as well as how we choose to respond to the thoughts. Anxiety is NOT the problem, it is how we respond to the anxiety which becomes problematic. Remember, just because we have a thought, doesn't mean it's true, and also doesn't mean it needs our attention.
