We’re coming towards the end of this year’s Birth Trauma Awareness Week and I feel sad. I feel sad for all the women coming away from their birth experiences f...eeling traumatised. Sad that the system seems to barely recognise the damage that is being caused. Sad that society struggles to see the trauma being caused and to a large extent reinforces the system narrative that A healthy baby is all that matters. The women who are being damaged by their birth experiences are not weak or fragile. They are strong independent women who expect the maternity care from a world class health service to see them as individuals and treat them with respect and to listen to them and work with them. I heard an interesting phrase recently from a woman who felt she had been groomed for compliance by the system. Grooming is something that is done to prepare someone for abuse. We have to change the system. It’s not good enough that 30% of women and birthing people are starting their parenting journeys feeling absolutely rubbish. Feeling disrespected and abused.
