Mattole King Tides Photos Needed Submit photos of the King Tides to the California Coastal Commission's Online Map What are King Tides? Why are they important? When do they happen? WHAT ARE KING TIDES?... "A King Tide is a non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides. Tides are long-period waves that roll around the planet as the ocean is "pulled" back and forth by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun as these bodies interact with the Earth in their monthly and yearly orbits. Higher than normal tides typically occur during a new or full moon and when the Moon is at its perigee, or during specific seasons around the country." (https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/kingtide.html) WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? The California King Tides helps us visualize future sea level by observing the highest high tides of today. You can help by taking and sharing photos of the shoreline during King Tides to create a record of changes to our coast and estuaries. WHEN DO THEY HAPPEN? This year, King Tides are happening on the new moon in November, December and January during high tide. The December high tides are the highest. December 13 at 9:10 am 14 at 9:55 am January 11 at 8:50 am 12 at 9:40 am How do I participate in the California King Tides Project? The California Coastal Commission collects photos and videos from the entire coast of California and compiles them in an accessible online map. If you would like to participate by adding your photo or video check out this link? https://www.coastal.ca.gov/kingtides/participate.html -- Jen Gilda Mattole Restoration Council mattole.org
