Have you ever wondered how to tell willows apart? Join us on Wednesday, May 26th at 7pm on Zoom as we delve into the wild and wonderful world of willows. Willows are incredibly diverse, with more than 400 species worldwide. We will cover identification of our 5 local species of willow here in the Petrolia area, and some fun facts of these special plants. Thanks to the #KingRangeAlliance for making this informational excursion possible. Please email [email protected] or head to... our website for registration info (event is free with a suggested $10 donation to benefit our native plant nursery). Any guesses as to which kind of willow is pictured? #willow #salix #californianativeplants #mattoleriver #willowinthewind #arroyowillow #salixlasiolepis

Back in December of last year, we worked with @sanctuary.forest to grow and install several thousand wetland plants on the banks of the Baker Creek string of pearls ponds. These ponds are designed to slow the flow of Baker Creek, near the headwaters of the Mattole, improving groundwater retention and thus increasing late season flows for the precious salmonids. Now in early May, we’re thrilled to see the plants thriving in their seasonally underwater world, providing habit...at for chorus frogs and salamanders! Check out those egg masses! Thanks to BLM Arcata for the photos, and thanks to @sanctuary.forest, @americorpswsp, and everyone else that has helped make this project a success! #groundwaterretention #mattoleriver #mattoleriverandrangepartnership #wetlandplants #chorusfrogs #ecosystemrestoration #habitatrestoration

Firefighter appreciation post! Having trained professionals in our area is critical for community fire safety. In our area, volunteers have already responded to a ~2 acre fire this year. Thankfully, responders were able to swiftly extinguish the fire - but it is a stark and real reminder of the coming fire season and the threats that will come with another dry, hot summer. Please consider supporting your local volunteer fire departments:...
