Social Security offers benefits for Wounded Warriors: According to Social Security, "Military service members can receive expedited processing of disability claims from Social Security. Benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application. The expedited process is used for military service members who become disabled while on active duty on or after October 1,2001, regardless of where the disability occurs."

The SSI program makes payments to people with low income who are 65 or older or are blind or have a disability. Disabled or blind children can also receive SSI.

You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled as it can take a long time to process an application for disability benefits (up to one year if you need to request a hearing).

Social Security pays disability benefits through two programs: Social Security disability insurance program and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

Social Security defines "disability" as an inability to perform any substantial gainful activity (SGA) because of a severe impairment that has lasted or is expected to last twelve continuous months or longer.
