MAGICAL SAN FRANCISCO This slanted building in Russian Hill might be an illusion, but how the neighborhood got its name is not. Russian Hill is named for Russian people - dead Russian people. A cemetery was located on top of the hill from 1848 to 1859. It featured a Russian cross, and all of the names on its headstones were written in Cyrillic. The city voted to prohibit burials within city limits in 1900. Most of the Russian population moved to outer Richmond, but the name stuck.
