She runs @markegardfamilygrassfed, whose meat will be used in our Earth Day Cook-In (4/22) with @hunterpence and @lastsuppersociety. Her ranch practices regenerative farming, which reverses the immense negative environmental impact that industrial farming has on our climate and ecosystems. It has such a massive impact that if 10% of California’s 54 million acres of rangeland were to s...equester as much carbon as the soil on their ranch does, it would be the equivalent to taking 2 million passenger vehicles off the road for one year. Their meat is also tasty as hell. Check out this new podcast features on @ournaturealways This week, I’m speaking with Doniga Markegard @dawn.again, a wildlife tracker turned regenerative rancher. In her memoir, Dawn Again, Doniga shares the incredible story of how a near death experience as a teenager changed the course of her life, setting her on a new path, back to nature and reclaiming her wildness. From a young age, Doniga was steeped in indigenous wisdom and eventually adopted by an indigenous elder... Gilbert Walking Bull. She learned the ways of the natural world at the Wilderness Awareness School, an alternative high school where there were no grades and the main measure of success involved having an active, participatory relationship with nature. An interest in permaculture led her to learn more about holistic management, and then regenerative ranching. Today, she operates Markegard Family Grass-Fed @markegardfamilygrassfed with her husband Erik, which is a regenerative cattle ranch that produces certified grass-fed and grass finished beef and lamb, and pasture raised chicken and pork. I loved speaking with Doniga because she has lived her life guided and informed by nature and its spiritual wisdom. When I was first really learning about climate change over ten year ago, I used to think that all meat production was harmful to the planet because of the methane produced and resource intensity required but now I know that the devil is in the details. In fact, the practices that Doniga employs at her ranch actually improves the biodiversity of the land, builds soil and sequesters carbon. It’s a philosophy that manages the cattle similar to how large antelope and elk once roamed the California grasslands. It’s a philosophy that mimics nature. As this year comes to a close we want to thank all of you who have been there with us through all this year has brought. You showed up at Farmers Markets, reached out to us during the crisis of fires to bring a meal or just send an e mail to let us know you were thinking of us. You adjusted to a new way of interacting at a distance, stuck with us as we transitioned our webshop and membership, learned to cook new things and supported local farms and ranches. It’s the strong fa...mily bonds that we have built upon and we know our kids by living through these challenging times have grown to be better humans with an understanding that hardships can bring us closer together. We are all looking forward to brighter days ahead and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sticking it out with us. We will see you this weekend at Sunnyvale and Palo Alto markets. Ranch Hand Suey says to come see us at Farmers Markets this weekend. If you go to the College of San Mateo Market be prepared to stock up because they are taking one weekend off on Dec. 26th. All of our other markets will be open every weekend. If you don’t make it to market visit our webshop. We will be doing home deliveries and our regular delivery route will take place on Wednesday 12/23 instead of Thursday.
