Antibodies are an important part of our immune system. Antibodies are proteins made in response to a specific toxin or foreign substance to help fight illness. They can be created through natural infection or vaccination. At this point, we know that natural immunity can last for up to 8 months, but many still experience a decrease in protection after 90 days (3 months). It's important to remember that your body can build antibodies from an infection, but that doesn't mean you will feel completely better once those antibodies are made. They work to protect you from reinfection.

BREAKING NEWS! The Food and Drug Administration has granted Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer vaccine in individuals age 12 years old and older. "Parents and guardians can rest assured that the agency undertook a rigorous and thorough review of all available data, as we have with all of our COVID-19 vaccine emergency use authorizations. - Janet Woodcock, MD, Acting FDA Commissioner.... "The FDA has determined that Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine has met the statutory criteria to amend the EUA and that the known and potential benefits of this vaccine in individuals 12 years of age and older outweigh the known and potential risks, supporting the vaccine’s use in this population." You can read more about the authorization here: http://ow.ly/5mpQ50EJnOS What now? There are a few more levels of review including the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting on Wednesday before we can start offering clinics, however, we have already started preparing. We are in communication with our local schools and are ready to start accepting those 12 and older at our mass vaccination clinics as soon as we are given the go-ahead. What to do while you wait? Talk with your child about the vaccine. Open up the conversation! Reach out to your child's primary care provider if you have specific questions about their health history, so you can be prepared.

Each May, the Administration for Community Living leads the celebration of Older Americans Month (OAM). This year’s theme is Communities of Strength, recognizing the important role older adults play in fostering the connection and engagement that build strong, resilient communities. This year, the Mariposa County Health & Human Services department will celebrate OAM by encouraging community members to share their experiences. Together, we can find strengthand create a strong...er future. Here are some ideas for bringing members of your community together for a safe afternoon or evening of outdoor entertainment and socialization: Organize a game night. Contactless options like charades allow teammates to work together from a safe distance. For more ideas, try searching online for contactless games for adults. Hold an outdoor movie screening. Consider a comedy or other light-hearted movie. Sharing a laugh can bring people together. Make sure household groups sit six feet from other families. Coordinate a musical event. Music can help people to connect, heal, and much more. Hire a band, let participants show off their musical talents, or just play music from an app and let everyone make requests. Keep music levels down and encourage clapping and distanced dancing over singing and shouting. The smaller the gathering is, the lower the risk for COVID-19. When possible, aim to keep activities with the same small group of people to keep your risk low while socializing.COVID-19 risk decreases significantly when you are vaccinated and gathering with others who are vaccinated. Follow all state and local health guidelines. Check your state health department for safety information. Read the latest CDC guidance on events and gatherings. As we continue to celebrate our nursing staff this week, we have two more quotes from our HHSA nurses. "I started this year working in an ICU with almost all COVID patients. Even though I am not working there anymore, the effects of this will stay with me forever. The number of people who passed away with only me in the room. Promising families that I would not let their family member die alone. Doing CPR on our patients far too young to die for an hour, while exposing oursel...ves to COVID. Coming home and trying to explain to my 3-year-old that I could not hug her until I undressed outside and took a shower. Nurses have literally given their lives this year to help save others' lives. If you want to thank a nurse, get vaccinated and wear a mask." Rosalyn Pyle, Public Health Nurse "I love my job and co-workers at HHSA. I feel so lucky to be working in my home community, and I can't wait for our lives to be 'back to normal'. Until we reach that point and beyond it, I will continue to practice nursing both in Public Health and Behavioral Health." Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, CalFresh emergency allotments have been extended to increase food benefits in response to Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its effects on the economy. If you have questions, give us a call at 209-966-2000. Effective April 1, 2021 a new policy for all CalFresh households has a minimum emergency allotment of $95 per month, regardless of household size. This change will be reflected in the April benefits issued during the month of M...ay. Households eligible to receive the maximum allowable allotment based on household size are now eligible to receive an emergency allotment of $95 per month. Households who are not eligible to receive the maximum allowable allotment based on household size, but whose emergency allotment is less than $95 per month under the previous model, will receive additional CalFresh benefits to raise their emergency allotment to the new $95 minimum. Households who are eligible to receive more than $95 per month under the previous model will continue to receive that amount.

It's the time of year to start thinking about holiday gatherings. This year, things will look a little different with COVID-19, so it's a good idea to start planning now. Things to plan for: -Wear your mask unless you are eating or drinking. -Practice social distancing. Make sure you are keeping 6 feet of distance between households.... -Focus on good hand hygiene. Wash your hands often, especially before eating. If you can't wash your hands make sure you have hand sanitizer. -Stay home if you are sick. Keep your friends and family safe by skipping the gathering. -Keep it short and keep it small. The more time you spend with someone, the higher your risk of getting or spreading COVID-19 from or to them. Remember, private gatherings must still be with no more than 3 households. -Take it outside. Plan for an outside event, but if weather doesn't allow for it, make sure your indoor backup plan has good ventilation and plenty of space to socially distance. -Avoid sharing. Make sure people aren't sharing cups or utensils. Remember, keep it safe, keep others healthy, and keep our community open. Make smart choices this holiday season.

We know everyone is concerned about today's Case Update reported at 4:30 pm. We wanted to share some information to help clarify some questions. What would make Mariposa County move back from the Yellow Tier to the Orange Tier? Two weeks in a row with 7 or more cases OR a case positivity rate over 2%... Things to remember: -A case is assigned to its Episode Date, not its Reported Date. So although all cases were reported today, they all may count on different days and some may even count for last week. Learn more about this there: http://ow.ly/bhMD50CeuzK -If a county's metrics worsen for two consecutive weeks, it will be assigned to a more restrictive tier after an additional week of data reviews. This means we won't suddenly move back and our metrics have to meet the Orange Tier criteria two weeks in a row. This also means we would ideally have a week to prepare for changes. -Data is reviewed weekly and tiers are updated on Tuesdays. Our team does our best to report this information out each Tuesday, but you can also check: http://ow.ly/gLec50CeuzJ Questions? Our team is here to help!
