Earlier this spring, MCHS Senior Sydney Jacobs took home the Poetry Out Loud County title and moved on to compete in California State Poetry Out Loud Finals with a brilliant recitation of the poem Enough by Suzanne Buffam. Impressed by the Arts Council's ongoing poetry initiatives and Sydney's performance, Suzanne volunteered to read alongside Syd and host An Evening of Poetry to bring awareness to the Arts Council's two poetry programs (Poetry Out Loud and Arts in Correct...ions) along with award-winning contemporary poet, Anna Maria Hong. This event is happening on Zoom, May 27th and is open to our Members, and Mariposa students and educators - join us! We're over-the-moon to make such a valuable connection with these poets, all thanks to Sydney! #mariposaarts #poetryoutloud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk3MpWwvsPQ
We're honored to introduce this special side-project! Arts in Corrections - a program that introduces incarcerated individuals at the Mariposa County Adult Detention Facility to the field of poetry and poetry literacy - produces chapbooks of participant poetry each season. These published chapbooks are both an opportunity to for AIC participants to share their creative voices with their community and way to collect support for the program. Learn more at www.mariposaartscounci...l.org/aic Chapbooks Volume 1 and 2, illustrated by Anna Friedland and Daisy Wellcome consecutively, are available now for sale at Sticks_Coffee in downtown Mariposa. They are $6.00 for one chapbook, and $10.00 for two with all proceeds returning to AIC for 2021. Special thanks to our program teaching artist, Laura Phillips, our partners Mariposa County Sheriff's Office, and Lt. Sean Land, Justin Reeder and Corrections Staff. As part of Arts, Culture and Creativity Month, a group of Mariposa and Tuolumne County delegates met with Assemblyman Bigelow (Assembly District 5) to talk about the many ways the Arts and Creative Placemaking are contributing to our region. This conversation helped encourage his support for a number of upcoming budget request that would increase funding and resources for the arts across California. Go team! Many thanks and deep appreciation to Assemblyman Frank Bigelow's District Office for giving us such a generous portion of his time to meet and engage us in a lively, warm and supportive conversation about the Arts in Central California. #ACCM2021 #MariposaArts

Happy New Year, friends! We don’t have to tell you that 2020 has been weird, and difficult and awful for a lot of people. The list of challenges everyone has faced is long (very long), but we can feel hope from the metaphorical 2021-sunrise coming up and with that, here is our shortlist of Things That Haven’t Been Terrible in 2020: https://bit.ly/38UynSj

We have some exciting news to share! The Mariposa County Arts Council has been awarded the California Arts Council’s Innovations + Intersections Grant. We are one of 6 funding recipients for this program and we will use this award to develop, create and install a series of site-specific artistic interventions and produce cultural programming addressing wildfire risk reduction strategies and representation of the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation - two deeply linked issues current...ly reframing Mariposa's community dialogue about fire management practices, historical narratives, and the connection between place and public health. This project would not be possible without our amazing partners: the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation/Miwumati Healing Center, the Mariposa County Planning and Health Departments and Sierra Foothill Conservancy. And deep gratitude to the California Arts Council for the vision, leadership and intention embedded in this funding opportunity. The Ah-Lo’-Mah’ project is more than public art. It’s a deploy integrated collaboration that connects Mariposa’s physical environment and culture to our sense of place. Tara Dawn Fouch - a Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation member - shares her experience learning traditional basketry and cultural practice from native elders and culture keepers for the first time: It was such an honor for me to be able to participate in the Ah-Lo’-Mah’ project. Prior to this, I had no experience ...in basket weaving or any other traditional native arts. Of course, I’ve always dreamed of learning so when Clay and my Great Aunt Sandy asked me to join I was all in! Admittedly, I hadn’t put a lot of thought into the project before instruction began so I was pretty surprised at what a meaningful experience it turned out to be. Basket weaving can be a very slow, deliberate process, but the time passes quickly when you work as a collective. Gathering with a group of other native women (some family - some women I had only just met) as we each labored on our individual baskets, but connected in our common goal. It was incredibly healing to just sit and weave and chat about family, the tribe, the weather, the fires... By the end of it we were all much more connected to each other. It’s something we shared together, particularly amidst these trying times when it’s easy to feel isolated and lost. I’m excited to continue to be more involved with tribal activities (we now plan to follow Sandy on a gathering mission, to harvest the weaving materials during the winter months). I’m also excited to include my own daughters so we can learn the ways of our ancestors together. That legacy depends on the involvement of many generations, after all. The Southern Sierra Miwuk have always been here it’s a good time to make ourselves more seen and heard - Creative Placemaking helped provide an outlet to share our story! Check it out! This is our first demonstration project for the Mariposa County Creative Placemaking Master Plan - a county-wide initiative that identifies policies, projects, and programs that will leverage art and design to make our community better. Help us build more projects like Ah-Lo’-Mah’ by taking the Creative Placemaking Community Survey today! www.mariposaartscouncil.org/cpmp-survey... Ah-Lo’-Mah’ draws on the Southern Sierra Miwuk tradition of basket-making, a practice that combines environmental stewardship, collaborative fabrication, and artistic expression to convey both the beauty of the county’s natural landscape and the richness of our cultural history and identity. This art installation is located along the Mariposa Creek Parkway (bottom of 5th Street). #MariposaCounty #MariposaArts #CreativePlacemaking
