To say we should be patient and tolerant in the face of trouble doesn’t mean we should give in. The purpose of engaging in the practice of patience is to strengthen the mind and strengthen the heart. But we need to remain calm. If we lose patience and our minds are swamped with emotion, we lose the ability to think clearly and discover how to remedy the destructive emotions that are upsetting us.
