Despite the proliferation of attention-getting restaurants in West LA, Downtown, and Silver Lake, there is truly no shortage of great places to dine at the fringes of Los Angeles’ urban core. That includes more sprawling mega-neighborhoods like the Valley and, as ever, the gigantic center of greater LA that is South Los Angeles. Comprised of many micro-cities and independent neighborhoods, South LA is basically one giant cultural cross-section of what Los Angeles has to offer, and is loosely defined as the area below the 10 Freeway, inland from the South Bay, and ending north of Long Beach and west of the 710.

South Los Angeles is in the midst of a significant coffee cultural shift. In a region historically known more for corporate coffee chains, the last 15 months saw a stunning number of African-American-owned cafes that either opened or plan to debut in 2020.
