Today marks the arrival of the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year. This is the point at which the North Pole is at its farthest from the sun during its yearly orbit. The winter solstice marks the official beginning of winter and is celebrated worldwide. However, in the Southern Hemisphere, it takes place on June 21st.
