Fawzat Saed keyed a fourth quarter run and led the team with 20 points to go with six rebounds. He also hit three 3-pointers. ... Fawzat has been huge for us, head coach David Lozano said. He’s been selfless for us. It’s been a pleasure to coach. He worked on his game during the pandemic on his own. He’s carried us offensively the whole season. Kevin Berdejo also scored 15 points for the Coyotes who had nine players score points. Raul Medrano scored eight with while A.J. Pickens and Isaiah Monge added seven points each. The Madera Tribune Even at an early age, nine-year-old Hazel Allinder has been wanting to help out less fortunate than her. She’s always been interested in stopping and giving homeless people food, Hazel’s mother, Sara, said. Before Christmas of last year, she said she wanted to have someone to stay with us so they know what it’s like to have a house or live in a house. I told her it was probably not going to happen, but let’s think about something we could do. That’s whe...n we came with the idea of doing care packages. Hazel’s kindness has not gone unnoticed. She opened the eyes of a friend and church member Vonny Sturgeon who wrote about Hazel’s kindness and was impressed about what she saw. Vonny is one of our church members and a friend of the family, Allinder said. She was impressed of what Hazel did. It was unexpected, but very sweet on her part. It was something we weren’t looking for, at all, but very nice. Sara and Hazel thought of things to put into a backpack. Sara did some research and found some interesting items posted on the Madera Rescue Mission website to include in a care package. We came up with our own list. I ended up ordering things on Target.com, Sara said. Madera County The Madera Tribune #maderaproud Hazel and Sara was able to put together four backpacks. They kept the backpacks in the car and let Hazel pick out who to give the backpacks to.

The Madera Tribune Although he’s been a part of the Madera Rescue Mission since September of 2019, Jesse Chavez officially took over as Executive Director taking over for former Pastor Mike Unger in July of 2020. It is rewarding to see people’s lives changed when you introduce them to a loving and caring savior in Jesus Christ, Chavez said. As executive director now since July of 2020, I’ve had the opportunity to keep the main thing, which is that Jesus Christ loves you.... So, we get the privilege of sharing with our guests this the Gospel. It is a life changing experience that many of our guests want and need. Chavez not only brings a strong sense of virtue, but the new Rescue Mission director brings with him family dynamic that fits the mold that Madera needs. Married for 43 years with three children Jesse, Celeste and Aaron with a total of nine grandchildren and more than 120 people in his family alone, Chavez comes from a large family tree and with the Madera Rescue Mission, Chavez plans on showing the same care and affection to his community members. By Nugesse Ghebrendrias The Madera Tribune For many families in the Madera and Fresno area, the full-time caregiving responsibilities renders the most common tasks difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish.... Add in the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, simple errands like grocery shopping can be an obstacle. However, with the help from the Valley Caregiver Resource Center and the Fresno Madera Area Agency on Aging, 60 caregivers and their families from the Madera and Fresno area were given over $200 in groceries. It warmed my heart watching the caregivers glance at their grocery bundle. Many caregivers stared in awe, questioning whether the whole bundle was truly for them, Family Consultant Elizabeth Avila said. It’s an amazing feeling being able to help such a wonderful community who does so much for their loved ones, especially when you hear, ‘You just made my day!’ Madera County Valley Caregiver Resource Center The Madera Tribune

The Madera Tribune Every time I take pleasure in my column Gravy by the Slice, I count my blessings that God sent Charles P. Doud to rescue The Madera Tribune from the scrapheap. We were headed there when the previous owners sold our sister papers to the McClatchy organization. There were two publications they didn’t want, the Turlock Journal and the Madera Tribune. I said it was like being the ugly child left behind at the orphanage. ... The 26 years I have been with the Tribune has been the most fun I’ve had in six-plus decades. Having no children of my own, the Tribune became my baby, and she is a handful. Between 1995-2002, our newspaper had a variety of people sitting in the boss’ Big Chair. Some of our publishers liked me and others not so much. Madera County The Madera Tribune

The Madera Tribune Chuck Doud was a unique creature. I can honestly say that I have never known anyone like him, and I seriously doubt I will ever again know anyone with the attributes and quirks of Chuck Doud. He was funny; he was caring and kind. He loved people and this community of Madera. He was strong and tough in ways no one else I know could be. One of the best ways to describe Chuck is to say that he became a friend to everyone. I have personal knowledge about how t...his worked for him. He became a very close friend to me, and no matter what I ever do (or did), I could never shake that friendship. He got under my skin like no other person I have ever known. I met Chuck more than 10 years ago, which is not nearly as long as many of the people in Madera have known him. We were both members of Madera United Methodist Church. In fact, I joined that church on the same day as Chuck and Annette Doud. We attended the Membership Class together, and then we all stood before the other members of the church to profess our faith and make a commitment to support the church through our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. The Madera Tribune A 26-year-old man is lucky to be alive, according to Madera police, after a high speed alleged DUI collision on Mace Street near east 5th Street. Officers said Francisco Santos-Guzman, of Washington was driving his black 2019 Ford Mustang when he lost control and struck several large trees and spun out into a fence before landing in a yard on Mace Street just before 2 a.m. on Dec. 2. ... Lt. Brian Esteves said Santos-Guzman also left the scene of the violent crash. I’m not sure how he was even able to get out of the (wrecked) car ... all the airbags went off, and with as much damage as there was. He’s fortunate to be alive. But he was found walking a few minutes later, over near Vineyard Street and Cross Streets. Esteves said. The wrecked Mustang was almost unrecognizable, as it was towed from the yard. The Madera Tribune SACRAMENTO As COVID-19 case rates and hospitalizations continue to rise at an alarming pace and threaten to overwhelm the health care delivery system, California health officials announced a Regional Stay at Home Order that will be triggered if Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity drops below 15 percent in a given region. The state health officials held a news conference on Friday to announce the San Joaquin Valley region, where Madera County resides, has ...an ICU capacity at 14.1 percent, below the 15 percent threshold allowed by the state. The order will be in effect for three weeks, which began Sunday. It instructs Californians to stay at home as much as possible to limit the mixing with other households that can lead to COVID-19 spread. It allows access to (and travel for) critical services and allows outdoor activities to preserve Californians’ physical and mental health. This limited closure will help stop the surge and prevent overwhelming regional ICU capacity. Madera County #wearamask #WearAMaskSaveALife

The Madera Tribune It took a while for panic to take hold of the passengers of the Titanic. Nobody believed the ship could sink, lest of all Sebastino del Carlo and his bride, Argene. Nothing could happen to them; they were coming to America to California to Madera. Sebastino del Carlo and Argene Genovesi had been engaged on Jan. 20, 1912, and one month later they were married in Lucca, Italy. By April, they had determined to seek a new life in a new land, so they made th...eir way to Cherbourg and purchased two second class tickets on the maiden voyage of the Titanic. This was to be their honeymoon. They had no way of knowing that four days later one of history’s greatest tragedies would end their bliss. Sebastino had decided to come to Madera because his new brother-in-law, Nello Barsotti, had found him a job in his bakery. Nello had married Eugenia Genovesi, Argene’s sister, and the prospect of having another sister close by thrilled the local couple (a third sister, Carolina Genovesi Malanca and her husband, John, lived in Fresno). When news came of the impending arrival of the del Carlos, the Barsottis prepared for a reunion that never came. #maderahistory

The Madera Tribune SACRAMENTO Due to the continued surge in COVID-19 infections, the California Department of Public Health has postponed the issuance of its updated youth sports guidance. The California Interscholastic Federation does not expect the CDPH will issue any guidance allowing for schools to return to full practice and competition until after January 1, 2021, at the earliest. Thus, all full practice and competition start dates are officially on hold until updated... guidance is issued. Originally, fall sports were to begin Dec. 7 for football and Dec. 9 for all other sports. However, that is now on hold. Therefore, to provide the 10 CIF Sections, our 1,605 member schools, and more than 800,000 student-athletes the best opportunity to compete in Season 1 Sports, once allowed by the CDPH and local county offices of public health, the CIF State Office is removing all Regional and State Championship events from the Season 1 (Fall Sports) Sports calendar. By canceling Regional and State Championship events, more student-athletes will have the opportunity to participate in a longer season, rather than a truncated season with Regional and State post-season play for a limited number of schools. The Madera Tribune/ DJ Becker Long-time elected Madera County Clerk Recorder Rebecca Martinez said the 2020 election and election day went smoothly but urged patience as approximately 11,000-plus paper ballots county and city wide remain outstanding and are still being processed, signatures verified and then counted. Early preliminary, unofficial election results Tuesday night caused some confusion when they were posted the evening of the election. Martinez said these results... represented only about 40,955 votes cast either by mail or in person and received and processed by 11:15 p.m. Tuesday night, the day of the election. The next updated unofficial count was published by 4 p.m. on Friday on VoteMadera.com on the official elections department website. Any remaining valid ballots will be reflected in subsequent updates released on the following Tuesday and Fridays. The Madera Tribune/ Cathie Campbell I am trying to think of a time when I did not have at least two or three basil plants growing in my yard or on the deck. I still call it basilico, being that my Italian Nana always called it that. At this writing, I just returned home from being evacuated for seven days, and of all things, I had been worried about my kitchen garden out on the deck, which would have been deprived of water all that time. I was amazed that everything was just ...fine, perhaps because the heavy smoke blocked out the sun. As soon as I can, I am going to make some pesto sauce. After living in a camper that was parked in a school parking lot, we did a lot of snacking and having sandwiches for dinner. I hope everyone is safe from fires, COVID-19 and even political and social unrest. What a year. #madera #foodie #basil

The Madera Tribune/ Bill Coate Madera County’s unorthodox, ‘Wild-West’ sheriff celebrated his birthday on election day ... A dozen pay phones lined the combination firehouse/police station in Chowchilla on that July afternoon in 1976. Twenty-six school children and their bus driver had been kidnapped, and newspaper reporters fought for space at the makeshift phone bank. Suddenly a man with a lean, hard torso and a jutting jaw came through the door and strode across the room. With a .45 pistol on his side and wearing a western hat and boots, he walked with purpose. Everybody knew this man was important even those who had never seen him before. There was no doubt that Sheriff Ed Bates was on the scene, and he was there to take charge and get those kids back home. #maderasheriff Madera County

The Madera Tribune/ DJ Becker A fast moving fire destroyed the vacant complex of buildings once known as The Madera Athletic Club in the 1800 block of Sunset Avenue. No injuries were reported in the fire. Madera Battalion Fire Chief Chris Trindade said the fire was reported about 10:15 p.m. Thursday but the fire had likely been burning at least 15 to 20 minutes inside before it broke through the roof of the empty structure.... The power had been shut off to the building some time ago and there was evidence of squatters coming and going, and living inside, Trindade said. The building was 50-75 percent involved (in flames) on our arrival. Our initial investigation shows the area of origin to be inside, in the lobby area. The fire burned through the wooden walls and then ran into other wooden interior structures. The heavy rubber matting was also still present inside and that also burned ... contributing to the heavy black smoke plume that was visible over the area. Madera County #madera #maderaathleticclub

The Madera Tribune/ Bill Coate Madera was founded in 1876, and from then until now the town has been ever mindful of the constant threat of fire. That fear is real. There have been enough conflagrations on Yosemite Avenue alone to fill a book on the subject. There is one downtown fire; however, the results of which caused very little distress to the residents of Madera. Few mourned the flaming inferno of 1918. In that fire, a good portion of the block on the south side of Yos...emite Avenue between D and C Streets was wiped out, and only a handful of people cared. The drama began as town marshal John Barnett made his midnight rounds on April 20. He had just walked past the saloon and bowling alley on the corner of C Street and Yosemite and was proceeding west, checking the establishments on the south side of Madera’s main street. Next to the bowling alley stood the fire station and then the post office. Both appeared secure. The harness shop west of the post office was locked up as well. Barnett continued past the large, three-story brick building that housed a barber shop, saloon, carriage house, and lodge hall. Everything seemed to be in order. #maderacalifornia #maderahistory
