The two year anniversary of yoga108 is next week...congratulations! Q: What made you take the leap to starting your own business? A: Theresa and I wanted to share Bhakti Yoga in Long Beach! We had both been teaching for many years, and wanted to take a next step. Q: Can you share some legal... tips for new businesses? Or your own legal experiences that others can learn from? Well, as you know Im a teacher not a lawyer... but we like to not cut corners. Go by city codes, follow rules, create contracts, outlines. We are a little square in that sense and I think it's a good thing. Q:How do you maintain balance and boundaries between work and life? A: It's hard! Theresa and I try to protect each other's work-life balance. On my day off, she holds it down. On hers, I hold it down. We don't text before or after 8am or 8pm. We have a structure in place to facilitate some work/life balance. Q: What does community mean to you as a business owner? How has community impacted your business, if at all? YOGA108 is a community. That's the whole point of it- a place people can come that isn't home or work, and feel connected, forge relationships, be seen. So, community is everything. SMALL BUSINESS WEEK INTERVIEWS CONTINUED! Wade Windsor (and his wife Lindsay) are some of the loveliest people you’ll ever meet. They run a true family business, @lordwindsorcoffee in Long Beach. Get to know Wade better below! Q: Why coffee? ... A: I got into coffee really heavily when I first started roasting coffee at home. It wasn't so much of a culinary endeavor but a fun DIY hobby. I latched onto the concept of making something on my own and being able to enjoy it. From there, the hobby grew and kinda consumed me. We started jokingly talking about opening up a coffee shop cause we saw a void for "specialty coffee" in Long Beach. That joke evolved into what we have now...a coffee roasting business and cafe in Long Beach :). Q: What is the easiest thing about owning your own business, especially a family business? A: The easiest thing was definitely being and staying inspired because it was still such a nerdy fun hobby for us. Not to mention, my wife is a logistical mastermind, so I was able to really engage in the coffee side and R&D which made me happy. Q: What does community mean to your business? A: Not only is community our customer base. It is the heartbeat of the ebb and flow of our business. We have so many unique people that come into our shop that inspire us, make us realize exactly what we don't be, etc. We have seen people meet at our shop that are now married with kids. We have seen dramatic breakups inside of our shop, cult meetings, you name it. Community is the essence of our business (don't mean to sounds too cheesy). Q: When, if at all, should a business owner ask for help? A: I think it's important to realize who the specialists are, and let them do what they do. Whether it be a plumber or an insurance broker; lean into these experts and it'll cut down on your time looking into it and overall make the end result so much better. Good legal representation is foolish not to have. Not only from a cynical stance if being there if the proverbial stuff hits the fan, but to help with changing business status, helping review new exciting contracts, etc. Go with Madaan Law, or go into the wilderness alone :)! @ Lord Windsor Coffee
