November is American Diabetes Month. Not only can diabetes affect your general health but is also linked to several diseases causing vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts are all more likely if you have diabetes. It is recommended that you get a diabetic eye exam every year if you have issues with high blood sugar. This month is Eye Injury Prevention Month. It is to bring awareness to the fact that 90% of eye injury's are preventable with proper eye protection. August is National Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. With school starting up it is a good reminder that your child's eye health is important for success. Be sure your child is getting a vision screening at their well visits to keep them on track and prevent academic delays. If they have never had an eye exam before consider making an appointment. Even if your child has great vision consider eye protection just for sports. Eye injuries are a leading cause of blindness ...in children and most of those are sports related. Today is World Optometry Day. This is the day we celebrate the profession of Optometry. Optometrists play a vital role in keeping us all healthy, safe, and productive. It is National Nutrition Month. Based on research by the National Eye Institute and others, there is a positive and significant correlation between good nutrition and prevention of AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) and cataracts. Diets rich in antioxidants, beta carotene, vitamin C and E, and zinc particularly play a role in good eye health. There are many more eye and body health benefits to be found in good nutrition. February ushers in Age-Related Macular Degeneration Month, AMD for short. This disease affects the macula of the retina. The macula is where you experience central vision to see things in front of you such as text, faces, and other objects. With AMD you lose this central vision but can still see your peripheral (side) vision clearly. Major AMD risk factors include a family history, being over 50, being a smoker, being overweight, hypertension, and diets high in saturated fats.... AMD is a disease that cannot be reversed, but can be treated. Many don't realize they have AMD until their vision becomes blurry, or distorted. That is why it is important to schedule regular comprehensive eye exams.
