Throwback Thursday: did you know that there used to be an oceanarium on the Palos Verdes Peninsula called Marineland of the Pacific? This tourist attraction was designed by famous architect, William Pereira, who also designed the LAX Airport. Marineland operated from 1954 - 1987, until it was purchased by the owners of SeaWorld San Diego. The new owners moved the popular killer whales and other marine animals to the San Diego facility and abruptly closed the park in 1987. In ...fact, the Marineland Orka, Corky, was given the name Shamu once it arrived at its new home in San Diego. Sound familiar? Marineland was left abandoned for nearly 20 years until until it was purchased by a developer in 1995 for $24 million who ended up transforming this plot of land into the modern day @terranearesort (as seen in the last photo) Marineland was best known for its performing orcas, Orky and Corky, as well as its swim-through aquarium, dolphins, sea lions, harbor seals, sharks and performing pilot whales named Bubbles and Bimbo. The park also allowed visitors to snorkel with marine life and had amusements like the Pacific Sky Tower where guests could get a 360 degree view of the coast high above the ground. Although Marineland is an interesting part of South Bay history I love our oceans and respect marine life and believe animals like whales, dolphins and seals belong in the wild. The South Coast Botanic Garden is an 87 acre garden with over 150,000 plants on Crenshaw Blvd. in Palos Verdes, CA. The plants in the garden come from all over the world.
