Our new face-covering policy goes into effect Dec. 15th! Out of the Pool Face-coverings are required for everyone over the age of 2 years old.... In the Pool Teachers and Parents are required to wear a plastic face shield. Swim Parents have the option to also wear a mask under their shield. California deems swimming lessons ESSENTIAL Yesterday we learned that California has officially recognized swim schools as an essential business. This means that regardless of which COVID Tier we may be in, we get to Just Keep Swimming! This is an amazing victory for swim schools across California! Unfortunately, we still do not know what this will mean for our SF school but we will continue to work with the SF Health Department on getting a reopening date and guidelines.... Bring your "learning pod' to the pool! Our new Bubble Classes are designed for peers who are already in a Learning or Social Pod together outside of swim class. The pod will make up the entire class - you provide the students! Bubble Classes for our 3-5 age group will only require 1 parent in for the entire class (parents can alternate weeks!). Get to know our new swim awards! (post 6 of 6) Level 1: Water Acclimation Ribbons: Rainbow, Green... Level 1 Goals: Your child is learning the basics of swimming and this starts with emotional readiness and proper breath control. Students should hold their breath with a proper Balloon Face - no blowing bubbles. What This Means for Parents: After your child graduates Level 1, outside of swim class you should expect to be in the water with your child, within arm's reach at all times. Level 1 graduates are often confident, but lack the decision-making abilities necessary to keep themselves safe around water. Special Note for Toddlers: In Toddler & Me class, you're working together on Level 1 Green Ribbon skills. If these are achieved before your child turns 3, they will transition to a Level 2 big-kid class. No matter how far they progress in Toddler & Me class, they will still earn a Rainbow Ribbon after successfully transitioning to a big-kid class (this means no crying and showing the ability to follow the teacher's directions, both challenging as they adjust to being in a class without their parent/caregiver). Get to know our new swim awards! (post 5 of 6) Level 2: Basic Water Safety Ribbons: Aqua, Blue, Red... Level 2 Goals: Level 2 is the most important level at LPB because it's where students learn how to come up for air while moving forward through the water and how to swim and float on their backs. Fins are weaned away in Level 2, so you will see a lot of repetition as your child's teacher reinforces skills with one and eventually no fins. What This Means for Parents: After your child earns their Red Ribbon, outside of swim class you should be able to be an active water watcher from the pool deck. Your child can swim independently and without fins, but must always be watched closely to ensure their safety. As with everything, age and maturity are factors in determining the safest amount of independence your child should be allowed. Special Note for Toddlers: Children who earn Green Ribbons in class with their parents will continue to progress through Level 2 skills in Toddler & Me class. When they turn 3, they will be placed in a Level 2 class with other 3-5 year olds and will work concurrently on earning a Rainbow Ribbon along with their next sequential ribbon. Get to know our new swim awards! (post 4 of 6) Level 3: Confidence Buiding Ribbons: White, Striped... Level 3 Goals: In Level 3, we address safety and work on endurance, prepping students for the introduction of strokes in Level 4. Your child will venture to deeper water to learn jumps, dives and treading. They'll also learn how to swim underwater and how to jump into the pool and get back to the wall without goggles. For some students, these skills are as challenging psychologically as they are physically. Entering the pool head first (dives) or without goggles can be scary as can swimming to the bottom to pick up rings. Parents can mitigate these fears by bolstering confidence in between lessons. Encouragement goes a long way in Level 3! What This Means for Parents: After your child graduates Level 3, outside of swim class you can expect to be able to sit on the pool deck and relax while keeping both eyes on your swimmer at all times (no phones, no books, no distractions). Level 3 graduates are strong and confident. They know how to fall into the pool and return to the wall without goggles or fins, but they also still require diligent supervision around water. Get to know our new swim awards! (post 3 of 6) Level 4: Stroke Introduction Ribbons: Purple, Orange... Level 4 Goals: In Level 4, students learn the basics of the four competitive strokes. Freestyle and Backstroke will come together completely while Breaststroke and Butterfly will be limited to building core strength and the foundational kicks needed to move on to Level 5. What This Means for Parents: Level 4 students are strong, confident swimmers. They are capable of starting junior swim team programs where only proficiency with Freestyle and/or Backstroke are required. Outside of swim class, you can relax poolside while watching your child have fun in the pool with friends (or join them). No one should ever swim alone and it's always a great idea to designate a non-distracted Water Watcher whenever multiple kids are swimming. It is not uncommon for some plateauing to happen during Level 4. While teachers focus on our principles of Pace, Pattern, Compassion, and Fun, sometimes the process of learning stroke basics doesn't feel fun for kids. The serious work of swimming is just getting started, but teachers will continue to utilize equipment, creative imagery, and games to keep the learning as fun as possible. Get to know our new swim awards! (post 2 of 6) Level 5: Stroke Development Ribbons: Bronze, Silver, Gold... Level 5 Goals: Go for the Gold! In Level 5, swimmers put together the four competitive strokes as well as Sidestroke (a safety skill) and a Racing Dive to Underwater Wigglebutts (dolphin kicks). Upon completion, students are eligible to sign up for our Adv. Swim class, where they will continue to increase their endurance and learn swim- team concepts like flip turns and relays while also fine-tuning their strokes. What This Means for Parents: LPB Grads often go on to join swim teams, while others are more than happy to simply be confident swimmers in any environment. Enjoy watching your child from poolside, but always remind them of the inherent dangers around swimming. Even Olympic gold medalists swim with buddies and adults nearby, and moving or open water (rivers, lakes) and boating still require the use of a personal flotation device for children. A glimpse of what no-contact swim lessons looks like at LPB. Parents are required to be in with swimmers under the age of 6, and the teacher guides the parent/swimmer team from a 6-foot distance. In the pool we require face shields for our teachers and parents, which are available for $5 at our check-in station. We charge your swim account for the face shield, making the check-in process brief. Our SAN BRUNO school opens this Monday, July 27th!! We can’t wait to see our SB Swim Families again! Swimmers ages 3-5 years old are required to have an adult in the pool with them. Only one caregiver per swimmer at a time in the school. Swimmers can enter building 5 minutes prior to class. Follow social distance and one-way traffic markings. Face coverings required for adults (ages 13 and up). Face shields required for parents in the water (buy at LPB for $5 or bring your own). Changing rooms open for changing tables and restrooms, only. Come ready to swim, and shower at home. OPEN ENROLLMENT for LPB San Bruno starts Monday, August 3rd!
