Loyalton Learning Garden 01.05.2021

Last week students learned about the importance of the sun and how it affects our climate. We looked at the earth's rotation around the sun and examined how depending on the earths tilt different places on our planet can have very different climates. Upper grades hid thermometers around the garden to better understand how solar energy is affected by surface characteristics (type and color of the surface) and students had to answer the riddle "if heat rises and mountains are c...loser to the sun, why are they colder" to better understand how altitude affects climate as well. Lower grades enjoyed brainstorming the sun's many jobs and making colorful sun hats. Last but not least, students examined their germinated seeds to determine viability. These were seeds students harvested from the garden last fall and we were very pleased with the results!

We welcomed students back to the learning garden this week. We spent the week reviewing our job in the garden and learning "Why We Need Plants". A few classes were able to go through the steps of germinating seeds to determine viability. Temperatures allowed us to explore the garden looking for new growth.
