Project spotlight: Maya Apartments, located at 4045 Broadway, Oakland, CA. : @emilyhagopianphoto This mixed-use, multi-family, pet-friendly apartment building features 47 market-rate units on top of a vibrant ground floor retail podium. The overall shape of the building was informed by a desire to respect the adjacent residential properties and avoid the typical wedding cake solution to a zero-shadow impact goal. The building form is broken down through vertical articulations informed by the program and property line. Small, varied step-backs allow sunlight to reach the adjacent residential site while also creating outdoor spaces for the building.

On this day, take time to remember those who have fallen. But on every day after, do more; put the freedoms they died for to greater and nobler uses. Lowney Architecture offices will be closed today in observance of #MemorialDay.

Hospitality + Modular = Perfect Match! The repetitive elements that make modular construction scalable are well-suited for buildings such as hotels. For The Moxy, with just a few different hotel types, 135 King rooms, 5 Accessible rooms, and 5 Bunk Bed rooms were able to be constructed off-site, delivered, and stacked on top of two levels of site built construction.

It’s seriously a vibe. The Moxy brand is a perfect addition to Oakland’s vibrant art scene. The bold, unconventional, and welcoming brand celebrates and invites creativity which is evident throughout the space’s details. Here, the first floor common space is decked out with colorful murals from artist @bud_snow and features curated pieces from @creativegrowth

Ken Lowney lends insight to the San Francisco Chronicle on how modular building is good urbanism in the article, Stocky modular buildings are popping up in East Bay. They look surprisingly good. The article highlights two Lowney projects, Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley and the newly opened Moxy hotel in Oakland, as examples of modular projects that are moving the East Bay forward. Supporting our friends at @communityfoodsmarket in their effort to save their store. This local, mission-driven grocer has been supporting our community of Oakland by providing affordable produce where the lack of access to fresh food has been an ongoing health issue. Today, they need help in boosting their business. If you live locally and need groceries, consider visiting Community Foods Market at 3105 San Pablo Ave. #communityfoodsmarket #servingwestoakland #shoplocal #supportsmallbusiness

This past year, we all have witnessed firsthand the impact global health has had on our communities. In recognition of World Health Day, and in connection with WHO’s 2021 theme of Building a Fairer, Healthier World, we as architects acknowledge our responsibility in designing healthier buildings for all. . . At the close of 2020, CEO, Ken Lowney spoke about the impacts Covid-19 would have on design. This included the need for improved building circulation, better indoor air ...quality, an increase in outdoor space, smarter buildings, thoughtful material selection and loose fit programming for adaptable spaces. . .
