Shelter Cove 10-17: I didn't get on the water til after 12:00. On my way out I saw Eric Kaii trolling for calibuts. I decided to troll a herring for salmon or whatever wanted it towards the green can since there was 53F water just outside the 57F water in the harbor. No bait and no bites, so I turned west and peddled out to 100ft to try for dabs and petrale sole. No biters there so I moved out to 120ft with no bites too. Next, I moved out to 140ft. I started getting bi...tes there, but it was still slow. I caught 2 dabs and a petrales sole before moving back inside near the whistle. I found some good piles of fish that was a steady bite. The rest of the day was steady action catching several lings, lots of blacks, a couple of canaries, a blue, a big copper, a China rockfish, and a yellowtail rockfish. Fish were caught on bait or Pline lazer minnow. See more

Humboldt Bay 9/14 - The calibuts are biting pretty good if you have good live bait. I landed 10 calibuts today and missed 2 bites. Only 2 were short, 1@ 22", 3@ 23", 3@24" and 1@31". All fish were caught in 14-23ft in different spots including the 3rd channel, past the middle bridge and from Woodley island to the harbor. Castnets work the best for live bait. I caught them on shiner perch, walleye perch and jacksmelt. 2-3 oz banana or bullet sliding weight with a 3.5-4ft ...25-30lb leader and a single Owner mutu light wire circle hook #1-2. All fish except the 31"er were landed by hand. I did see that one of the short halibut had been netted before by the beat up tail. DON'T NET ANY FISH UNLESS YOU KNOW IT'S LEGAL AND YOU PLAN ON KEEPING IT. The circle hook I'm using has consistently hooked every halibut in the side of the mouth where you can play the fish out without much worry of losing it. Be prepared to get splashed. See more

My goal today in Trinidad today was a 24" rockfish and a 40" lingcod. I ended up with a 23" vermillion rockfish and a 38.75" lingcod. Pretty damn close to go...al met. I also kept a 35" smurf blue lingcod as well. I released a handful of blacks and a couple other cookie cutter 26-27" lings. No cabezon love today. See more

Yesterday's trip in Trinidad went well except for the treble hook in the thumb at the end. My thumb feels better now without the dangling hook in it. 1 36" 20lb smurf lingcod 2 vermillion (1@6lbs) 3 black rockfish ([email protected]" & 6lbs) 1 18" cabezone
