This beautiful Ferruginous hawk, Buteo regalis, was photographed in the foothills of Hot Springs Mountain. A group of them have stopped in the area during southern migration and we couldn't be happier! Ferruginous Hawks are birds of the West and the northern Great Plains, residing in open country. They favor vast expanses of Sagebrush prairie and grasslands in summer but many move to agricultural or tilled areas in winter. They are unmistakably large and bulky; being on averag...e the largest of the North American buteos. However, the size difference between male and female (which are larger) can be great, with some females over twice the weight of their mate! Ferruginous feed on squirrels, snakes and mice which are in no short supply in our area! Many thanks to Los Coyotes neighbor and friend Hans Peterman @capitanhans for capturing this magnificent raptor! #ferruginoushawk #raptors #hotspringsmountain #naturephotography #nature #hawkwatch #birding #audubonsociety #getoutside

We're wild about lichens here! Lichens are a complex life form that is a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms, a fungus and an alga. The dominant partner is the fungus, which gives the lichen the majority of its characteristics. Simply put a lichen is a fungi-algae sandwich! Lichen loves sunlight and moisture, so it is often found in sunny, wet spots, one of the habitats found here on the reservation. Lichen grows on trees that are already in decline, rather than ...on healthy trees but it can be found on boulders and various other hosts. Lichens have been used for many things by both animals and humans. They provide forage, shelter, and building materials for deer, birds, and insects. In fact, some insects have adapted their appearance to look like lichens, which are a large part of their habitat. While most lichens are not poisonous, there are a few that are, like Wolf Lichen (pictured here, at the top, center of the picture). Never eat anything gathered in nature unless it has been positively IDed and a reminder that gathering here on the reservation is strictly prohibited. Fun fact: On July 15, 2015, Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill designating lace lichen, Ramalina menziesii, the California State Lichen. The law took effect January 1, 2016, making California the first state to recognize a lichen as a state symbol. For more information on lichens please see the link below. https://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/beauty/lichens/ #lichen #lichens #nature #getoutdoors #science #enviroment #loscoyotestribe #hotspringsmountain #sandiegobackcountry

Fall colors have arrived on Hot Springs Mountain's Quiet Road Loop! The black oaks (Quercus kelloggii) have begun their display of vibrant yellow to red hues which also signals the arrival of cooler temps. We welcome you to come take a walk in the forest! The ingress and egress of Quiet Rd. Loop is at mile 2 of Sukat Rd. Be prepared for the 1500' elevation gain in these couple of miles, they can be a good workout but you can take as many breaks as you'd like and once in the forest you can enjoy the serenity. Quiet Rd. Loop is a fairly flat .91 miles making the round trip hike from the campground approximately 5 miles. To make your reservation to hike or camp please see our website- https://www.loscoyotestribe.org/

Plant and animal communities of San Diego County are adapted to thrive in highly variable climates. The County’s wet season is between November and April, an...d during that time, a large amount of our annual rainfall occurs. What percentage of our yearly rain all occurs between November and April? Comment your answer below! - - - - - - The Mediterranean-style climate is characterized by extreme variability in rainfall. Approximately 80% of rainfall occurs between November and April with the remaining months being hot and dry. There is more year-to-year precipitation variability in Southern California than anywhere else in the country. As the climate changes, this variability will become more extreme, resulting in more intense, frequent droughts, intense flood events, and changes to local plant communities and biomes. To learn more about the relationship between precipitation and climate change, read the Climate Science Alliance’s 2018 Ecosystem Assessment report here: bit.ly/2HDMnGm -- #Connect4Wildlands #Climate #Connectivity See more

HORNED LIZARD Usually showing a disapproving stare, these little ones are armed for defense from predators with short spikes on their backs. They may also puff up to enlarge and with some species they can squirt a stream of blood from their eyes to confuse predators. Horned Lizard population is on the decline due to pest control of native ant species and habitat destruction. This one pictured is young and you can see how their color and texture helps to blend into the granite rocks. Remember that our animal relatives are special and should never be taken home or displaced. Respect them for they take care of you in ways you will never know. #hornedlizard #sandiegohiking #loscoyotestribe #hotspringsmountain #reptile

warning, excessive profanity However, this video showcases a standoff between a human and a mountain lion. He is lucky to be alive! ... Here are steps to take when encountering a mountain lion (source National Park Service) Do not hike alone. Hike in groups, with adults supervising children. Keep children close to you. Keep children within your sight at all times. If you see a mountain lion: Stay calm. Hold your ground or back away slowly. Face the lion and stand upright. Do not approach a lion. Never approach a mountain lion, especially one that is feeding or with kittens. Most mountain lions will try to avoid a confrontation. Give them a way to escape. Do not run from a lion. Running may stimulate a mountain lion's instinct to chase. Instead, stand and face the animal. Make eye contact. If you have small children with you, pick them up, if possible, so they don't panic and run. Although it may be awkward, pick them up without bending over or turning away from the mountain lion. Do not crouch down or bend over. Biologists surmise mountain lions don't recognize standing humans as prey. On the other hand, a person squatting or bending over looks a lot like a four-legged prey animal. If you're in mountain lion habitat, avoid squatting, crouching, or bending over, even when picking up children. -If the mountain lion moves in your direction or acts aggressively: Do all you can to appear intimidating. Attempt to appear larger by raising your arms and opening your jacket if you are wearing one. Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly in a loud voice. If looking bigger doesn't scare the mountain lion off, without crouching or turning your back, start throwing stones, branches, or whatever you can reach in its direction (e.g., toward it, but not directly at it). Aim for the ground in front of it; don't throw things directly at it just yet. Think of these as warning shots. You aren't wanting to hit and unnecessarily injure the mountain lion, but you do want to show it that you can defend yourself and potentially injure it. And that will hopefully deter it from approaching any closer.

Hello All, A group of us on the reservation have partnered with San Diego Food System Alliance and are calling upon Tribal community members to participate in ...San Diego County Food Vision 2030, an effort to develop a shared vision for transforming our region’s food system over the next 10 years. To create a food system that works for everyone, the Alliance is engaging the full community, including people who produce, prepare, distribute, serve, and eat food. We must build a shared visionone that includes the voices of San Diego County tribes. Over the next decade, lawmakers, food system practitioners, funders, and many others will use Food Vision 2030 to make critical decisions about food in the region. We hope you will join us in reimagining a healthier, more sustainable, and more just food system for all. Take the Survey Now Every response matters and helps us understand what food issues San Diegans would like to see prioritized over the next decade. Responding takes 5 minutes. The first 40 people who complete the survey (and provide their email at the end of the survey) will receive a $20 gift card. Help us spread the word! See more
