Important Financial News The 10 year/2 year yield curve inverted this morning. What in the heck does that mean? In short, it means that shorter-term investments are yielding a higher rate of return than longer term investments. This means that the markets see an underlying weakness in the long-term outlook for the economy. In the past, every time this has happened, a recession followed within a year. But before you start thinking that a big real estate bubble is going to ...pop like 2008, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Anyone who got a mortgage prior to 2008 and has gotten a mortgage since then can attest banks have been far more strict on people qualifying than they were in the early to mid 2000s. People who are in homes now can actually afford them, so there’s unlikely to be a huge glut of foreclosures like there was back then. Additionally, we still have a serious housing inventory shortage here in California, whereas in 2008, home builders were building homes like crazy so there was just too much inventory when people lost their jobs back then, and the laws of supply and demand kicked in and home prices went way down. The good news is that interest rates during this next recession are likely to hit all time lows, allowing people to get a great bang for their buck in their next home purchase. All of these factors likely mean that home prices will still rise, albeit gradually, during the next recession. So if you’re waiting for a crash like 2008, don’t hold your breath!
