This evening, we began the Spectrum and LNESC Oxnard Conexiones project with the families of Cohort 2. The project allows us to provide basic digital literacy ...to parents of students attending OUHSD. The cool thing about the Zoom meeting is that students are also actively engaged in teaching their parents how to use a laptop. Additionally, we are able to provide each family with a high performance laptop for easier access. Thank you to facilitators. Ms. Rica and Ms. Cristina. Having bilingual workshops allows us to tap a broader Spanish-speaking audience. Thank you SPECTRUM for your continued support.

What a LULAC Ventura County quin-council meeting today! An exciting sharing of information designed to help families, students and small businesses in our commu...nity. Thank you to Bruce Stenslie and Rigoberto Gonzalez Nossa, who were our special invited guests this morning. They briefly highlighted the services offered by the Economic Development Collaborative (EDC). We thank them for the timely, relevant presentation and best of all, discovering the wide range of help EDC offers free of charge. If you're an entrepreneur or interested in business and want to learn more about EDC, schedule an appointment with them at https://edcollaborative.com/ Another area we discussed today was the latest information available on the COVID-19 vaccination program and where to get the vaccine. The public information office provided us some valuable links we can share with you: https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/vaccine-information/ Also, for a breakdown on how the federal funding is being used, go to: https://www.vcnewschannel.com/news/417-county-cares-funding Thanks to Ms. Ashley Bautista, Public Information Officer for the County of Ventura for her assistance in getting the latest information. Another special guest we were happy to welcome was Dr. Jorge Garcia, CSUCI Professor, Mathematician and Academic Advisor to our Young Adults Council. So many amazing guests and thank you to the LULAC Youth and Young Adults for their input and brilliant questions. #LULAC

Today marks the end of fiscal Y3 for our Upward Bound and CIDream program. We had a 100% senior graduation rate (N=27). More than 90% began or will begin post-s...econdary education in Fall. The LNESC Oxnard team assisted students in securing a total of $105,000.00 in scholarship funds. Plus, we ended the month with two workshops on college tips for our students. The team met for the last time with a huge farewell to Johanna. She will be moving forward with her school Counseling program. We wish her much success. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. For us, we will keep plugging away as we welcome 27 more students and incoming tutors into our family.

Yesterday, we bid farewell to our #UBCI and #CIDream students for the rest of the summer break. Some of them will be leaving us for college all the way from San... Francisco to New York City. The remaining students will begin classes in an unfolding period of time as school districts continue to lay out distance learning plans for fall. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to the amazing LNESC Oxnard staff for your unwavering focus on our students academic achievement and growth. Thank you to OUHSD Admin (so many to name) for your consistent and much needed support and to the teachers, Ms Perez and Ms Favela. They were patient with us and never skipped a beat in their instruction. Thank you Ms Scott, former Vice-Principal, Carlos, our #CIHS migrant counselor, and Pete for always being the backbone of our many campus requests. Thank you #careersinenergy and our angel, Ingelise Guy, for allowing us to reach beyond the UB students. We are now able to academically support our Migrant students plus additional students in their pre-college journey. Lastly, Thank you to my hubby, David Cruz for his Uber skills and all the school supply hauling he does for us. We end our 2019-2020 school year And summer program with a BANG! Hooray! We are in Week 6 and the last week of our Upward Bound Summer Program. In addition to participating in academic enrichment courses, our students enjoyed... their virtual Friday field trips. Kudos to the #LNESCOxnard and OUHSD core team for all their input, dedication and commitment to our students. In... Week 3, the students watched the film Pursuit of Happiness. Following the movie, we discussed a series of questions that included financial and emotional struggles. The students also practiced a breathing stress relief exercise. During these times of uncertainty and stress, it is important to take care of our mental health, our wellbeing, and to never quit when we experience challenging times. After all, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Week 4, the students watched The Graduates "Los Graduados." It's a documentary that explores the struggles and triumphs that Latino students face in the American public education system. Afterwards, they put together a time capsule to be opened in the summer of 2021! One of the items included a letter to themselves on the goals they wish to accomplish this upcoming school year. Personally, I believe we have some challenging times ahead for our students and teachers. Access to quality technology, the emergence of a new pedagogy and student learning will be key to their academic success. We will be here to provide support, consistency and reassurance to our students. #UBCI #CIDream #LNESCOxnard #LNESC

It's been a see-saw week with so much happening. So many rapidly changing conditions. So many things testing our patience, emotions, and endurance. For us, it w...as another week of intense planning as we provide our students with the best education possible in a virtual world. Today, we ended Week 3 of our Upward Bound Summer Program on a high note. Our students learned the concept of thermal energy using the sun's power in a good way. I am blessed to work with the most amazing OUHSD teachers and LNESC Oxnard Team. Our students are resilient and eager to learn. #UBCI #CIDream #LNESCOxnard #CIHS. An excellent link to share with your students and children. https://science-u.org/experiments/solar-oven-smores.html

I’m happy to say our first week of the TRiO summer program was a huge success after months of preparation. For the next six weeks, the Upward Bound and CIDream ...students will be taking prep courses in Math, Calc, English and Spanish via a synchronous virtual learning environment. We are lucky to have an excellent team of OUHSD teachers and LNESC staff and tutors working together as we prepare our students for school in Fall. We will miss physically being at the CSU Channel Islands campus this summer which has been our tradition the last few years. The Upward Bound and CIDream students ended the week participating in a virtual Friday field trip with a Paint and Sip activity. After viewing the movie ‘Long Shot’ on Netflix, the students were asked to paint on Canvas how they viewed Social Justice. Their paintings are highly expressive, full of life and energy. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for next weeks virtual Friday field trip.

Today was a special day for the Upward Bound Channel Islands and CI Dream students. Together with some very talented VIP guest speakers, we celebrated a safe sp...ace virtual circle to confront, explore, share and learn about Black Lives Matter and affirm that we are one in this struggle for true equality and equity in America. What a privilege to listen to Anthony Hull, Demetrius Beckham, and Mi'Chael N. Wright. Anthony and Demetrius are passionate digital storytellers and content producers in the black and brown communities (https://www.sideprojects.film/), while Mi'Chael is a PhD candidate and academic researcher from the University of Minnesota. She is examining how digital media is affecting the way we see one another and the impact social media has on young people. Another highlight was the discussion with hip-hop artist, author and educator, Olmeca Barragan (https://www.olmecaofficial.com/). His spoken word set to music and powerful imagery entitled from Migration to Graduation is transformative and reflects the story of many of our students who joined him today. A huge shout out to our very own LULAC Youth members Tania Salceda and Sarahy Torres for their update on AB1460. They recently met with California State University Board of Trustee Member Silas Abrego on our support of the Bill that would require each of the CSU's to provide at a minimum, one 3-unit course in ethnic studies as an undergraduate graduation requirement. The bill is on the Senate floor and has been ordered to its third reading, which is still being processed. VOTE YES! It was difficult to contain our emotions which is why the help of Lilliana Cachu, LMFT was so healing and helped us focus our spirit and love on lifting each other (https://enlighteniluminar.com/). Thank you to Ms. Jaimeson Sonne and the LULAC Youth from Orange County and to Mr. Ray De Los Santos, Upward Bound Dallas LNESC team and his students who joined and every other guest. This was a memorable time and hopefully, the first of many opportunities to share our stories with one another. Also, thank you to the baddest Moderator of all times, David Cruz, our sponsor #careersinenergy and the amazing and hard-working LNESC Oxnard Team. I could not do what I do without their expertise and tremendous support. #UBCI #CIDream #LNESCOxnard #LULACYouth #CIHS
