"While the public continues to struggle with its preferred strategies and desired objectives, Loma Linda University Health is strengthening its own determination and response to the racial crisis around us. While we remain committed to the concerns of all diverse groups among us, today is the right time to stand together with our black colleagues, to feel their pain and join with them in planning a better future. Fighting racism is a battle we all must own and engage in. Over... the past few weeks we have had many conversations on campus, listening to painful stories of slights, outright rejections, insults and purposeful hurt. While we may be able to recognize some of these as unconscious bias an unfortunate heritage from a hidden past they are still not acceptable. Acknowledging the cause is not a defense, and certainly does not decrease the pain felt by someone of color. I wish to personally and organizationally apologize to each one who has been hurt. Our commitment, reflected across our campus, is that this is the work of a lifetime, not the response to any singular event. This work is what our Lord requires of us, to do justly and to accept everyone as children of His utmost regard. This is a marathon. So, let me outline some of the purposeful steps we are taking today at Loma Linda University Health: Acquaint ourselves with the background of racial injustice by reading and listening Share personal stories publicly to understand and keep the issues real for each of us Continue to educate all on our campus about acceptable comments and relationships Serve everyone with dignity and respect in all our clinical and educational services Maintain strong pipeline programs to grow minority professionals and future leaders Encourage personal responsibility with a see something say something culture Strengthen our personnel policies with an agreement to address when necessary This is not trying to be politically correct, it is being Godly correct! Please join me in this commitment to root out racism and create a culture of acceptance and inclusion for all." -Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, President of Loma Linda University Health
