You might think winning a medal at the Summer Games would be the pinnacle of an athletic career, a life highlight that could not be matched . . . but in the cas...e of Kimberly Vandenberg, you would be wrong. Kim, a member of the bronzed-medal winning team in the 4 X 200 Freestyle event in the 2008 Beijing Games, certainly appreciates that shining moment, but she has continued to shine in her sport, both as a competitor and a mentor and inspiration to schools of young swimmers. With a fitness level rarely matched by athletes 10 years past their prime, Kim continues to compete but now especially revels in helping the next generation of swimmers. She recently created Kim Swim Studios to help new swimmers develop a more balanced approach to life skills, school, social lives, training, all while dealing with the pandemic. We focus on positivity, relationships, health, mental health in a balanced way, which can be so difficult when focused on a singular goal, she explained. We explore the influences of breath work, yoga, meditation and mindfulness practices in relation to competitive swimming . . . and focus on empowering one another, respecting differences, and identifying goals. When young swimmers look up to Kim, they see a champion, a medalist, and the picture of health and beauty few ever achieve. But they also see something that makes Kim very happy: someone who lives to help them achieve their grandest dreams.
