Hi! My name is Kris Portner and I’m the Artistic Director of Liv DanceArts. Whether you’re new to our studio or you’ve been here since the beginning, I want to say thank you for being a part of the #LivDanceFamily in 2020! The last regular class was held on a Thursday night in March and the shutdown happened so quickly that many of the dancers left their pointe shoes tucked away in their cubbies, warm-ups hanging on ballet barres, and hair pins sitting in neat little piles ...in the dressing room. We never imagined not being able to perform for the remainder of the year and missing the final bows of our beautiful graduating seniors. We quickly pivoted to a completely live online platform within days of the SIP. Our Alumni from all over the US stepped up to teach and motivate when times got tough, and we shifted our schedule to shorter 6 week sessions in order to make real time changes as our county stopped and started and stopped again. LDA also welcomed a whopping 8 new faculty members to bring new energy and classes to our students over the last 9 months! Our dancers discovered that although applause is exciting it’s really the magic of dancing among our friends that truly matters most. They got creative, rearranged their lives and their furniture, and dug deep to uncover that they’re artists no matter what room they’re dancing in. There was laughter and tears as they kicked over lamps and spun into sofas. It wasn’t easy for anyone - but they made it happen. As we look ahead to 2021 I can’t predict what we’ll be dealt; but the joy, the excitement, the incredible heart pounding adrenaline rush that we’ll all experience together as we walk into a theatre again?.... that first time the stage lights hit our face?... I can already feel the warmth on my cheeks! So thank you from the bottom of my heart. On behalf of our entire faculty and every single one of our students. Whether you never stopped dancing with us or you’ve been cheering us on from afar. We are stronger, braver, and ready for whatever 2021 has got for us.
