People love to talk about "food addiction" or "sugar addiction" or sugar being like crack cocaine. My favorite dietician, Glenys Oyston does a really great job picking the "science" apart in her latest blog post. I will say it again and again, restriction leads to feelings of addiction. Dieting leads to addictive behaviors. "A lot has been made of the similar ways that highly palatable foods and addictive substances light up certain neural pathways. But guess what those are... pleasure pathways. They also light up when we receive hugs from people we love, hang out with our pets, or have sex. So the lighting up of those pathways alone do not indicate addiction." Dare To Not Diet https://daretonotdiet.wordpress.com//is-food-addiction-a-/

Check out and share this new website that lists Bay Area therapists who've opened up sliding scale/low fee/pro bono slots for activists involved in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The work is so important, challenging, painful, and powerful - activists need self-care and emotional support. http://healingforactivistsbayarea.weebly.com/

I just published my first bit of prose for Psyched in San Francisco Magazine. Enjoy! And please share. http://www.psychedinsanfrancisco.com/voices/

My latest article in Psyched in San Francisco is a strongly worded open letter to Whole Foods' CEO John Mackey explaining why he has no business checking his employee's BMI's or basing employee discounts on this information. Please share. I hope to turn this into a petition at some point soon. http://www.psychedinsanfrancisco.com/why-whole-foods-welln/

I know this can be a tough time of year for people around food, body image issues. In January, when your friends are trying to cope with their shame by going on cleanses and hitting the gym, instead come get some real, much needed support. I have 2 openings for this ongoing group. Participants have enjoyed learning how to open up to their peers and exploring the underlying issues behind their food and body obsessions.
