Spotlight on: Helms Bakery District (E.L. Bruner, 1931) From the outside, this 1931 Art Deco building appeared as an office building. But behind those walls was... an 11-acre complex including a bustling factory whose machinery produced, packaged, and truck-loaded bread still warm from the oven as well as fresh pastries, donuts, cookies, and candies. Those ovens were kept busy because one year after opening, the owner, Paul Helms (1889-1957) had obtained a contract to supply baked goods to the 1932 United States Olympics team, hosted by Los Angeles. A testament to that contract remains today and is seen in the building’s distinctive rooftop neon signs. A second bakery plant opened in Montebello in 1948, further extending Helms’ reach. At its peak, Helms maintained a fleet of over 1,000 distinctive yellow vans, visible in suburban communities from Fresno to San Diego. Contracted to provide bread for the Apollo 11 space mission, Helms-baked bread was in fact, the first bread on the moon. Ironically, the 1969 lunar landing of the spacecraft and its bread coincided with the year Helms Bakery closed its doors. As the space age arrived, so had the competitive challenges of national supermarket chains (Helms’ products were never sold in stores), higher wages, automation, and the mounting costs of maintaining the signature Helms delivery trucks. Today, this former bakery is home to specialty shops, furniture stores, restaurants, and more. But its history remains intact through history walls, art pieces, original repaired and relit neon signs, and more. Even some of the signature delivery trucks remain on-site! See this historic place in person! Our October 19 event, Culver City at a Crossroads, includes a 40-minute guided tour of Helms Bakery District. We only have a handful of spots left on this tour register now! Tour details and registration: http://bit.ly/2PKQhAN Photos by Jessica Hodgdon/L.A. Conservancy

@arcanabooks Book of the Day > New Architecture Los Angeles. Published by Prestel. This exhilarating and richly illustrated guide to Los Angeles’s most excitin...g new buildings establishes the city as a mecca for forward-thinking and environmentally conscious architecture. Some of the world’s leading architects are making their mark on Los Angeles’s cityscape with exciting and innovative projects. Fifty of the most striking buildings are profiled in this book that features every type of architecturehouses, municipal structures, art museums, office buildings, performance spaces, and houses of worship. Some of the world’s leading design firms, including Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Eric Owen Moss Architects, Selldorf Architects, and wHY Architecture, have contributed to the city’s structural vernacular. While the projects here are as varied as the luminous Walt Disney Concert Hall by Gehry Partners and Bestor Architecture’s compact housing development named Blackbirds, each building embraces an unmistakably Californian aesthetic reimagined for a new century. With original photography, this is the first book to focus on the surge of creative building that has taken place in Los Angeles in the new millennium. @prestel_usa
