Sharing this from the El Monte Police Department page. Remembering Officer Tony Arceo: If you've ever spent time in El Monte, you probably have passed by or spent time at the Tony Arceo Park across from the El Monte Community Center. It's the one with the amphitheater that hosts our annual concerts in the park. Know the park? Do you know who the person is behind the name of the park? Manuel "Tony" Arceo was a police officer with the El Monte Police Department. Over 40 ye...ars ago today, Tony, who was fulfilling his duty, even while on his day off, was preparing to report to Rio Hondo Court to testify on a case when he heard about a barricaded suspect who was holding hostages at the "Buy Back" Pawn Shop near the intersection of Ramona and Main in Baldwin Park. Instinctively, Tony headed that way to assist the Baldwin Park Officers who were in an intense standoff with multiple shots exchanged. On that fateful day, Tony made a valiant effort to stop the suspect who attempted to flee the front of the store. Tony struck the gun wielding suspect twice, but was unfortunately shot in the chest by a stray bullet. The single shot to the chest killed the then 31 year old Tony Arceo. Ironically, Tony was scheduled to receive an award from the El Monte City Council that evening for his heroism in saving an elderly blind couple from inside a burning mobile home. That commendation would have been his second. His first was received for saving the life of fellow officer, Terry Long. In 1974, the El Monte Police Officer's Association made a motion to rename the El Monte City Park to the Tony Arceo Park which was approved by the city council on October 8, 1974. A wreath bearing a ribbon with Tony's Name and End of Watch date is hung on the exit of the police parking lot to remind officer's of the sacrifice made by Tony and others like him before us. Thank you Tony for your service. See more
