Californians Will Need a REAL ID to Fly for Thanksgiving 2020 Get REAL ID ready by planning ahead during the holiday travel season Sacramento In advance of Thanksgiving the biggest travel holiday of the year the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding Californians that new federal ID requirements to fly within the United States or enter secure federal facilities take effect October 1, 2020. Californians who fly to visit friends and family should be aware of the ...new federal requirements and begin making necessary preparations for a REAL ID so next year’s travel arrangements are not derailed. Let this holiday travel season be a reminder to all Californians that the October 2020 federal enforcement date will already be here by this time next year, said DMV Director Steve Gordon. If your identification card or driver license expires after the federal enforcement date, and you need a REAL ID sooner, we encourage you to apply now. As a reminder, a REAL ID driver license or identification card can only be obtained by visiting a DMV field office with the required documents: An identity document (valid passport, birth certificate, etc.) A document with a Social Security number (Social Security card or W-2 form showing entire number) Two hard copy documents showing California residency (utility or cell phone bill, bank statement, mortgage bill, etc.). A list of federally accepted application documents and other information can be found on the California DMV REAL ID website. To save time, the DMV encourages residents to fill out their application prior to visiting their nearest DMV office and to consider those that offer Saturday and extended morning hours. Californians can also check the status of wait times at their local branch by visiting www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/fo/fotoc. For the complete document checklist, an the interactive quiz to find out if it’s time to get a REAL ID, and a list of other federally approved identification that can continue to be used after October 1, 2020, such as a passport, visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov.

California has been working toward compliance for a long time, and it is a testament to the hard work of many that this day has arrived, said Kathleen Webb, acting director of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). We thank the Department of Homeland Security for its approval as we work to prepare Californians for the new federal identification requirements that begin October 2020. Starting October 1, 2020, DHS will require passengers to show a valid passport or other fe...derally approved document, like a REAL ID driver license or identification card, to board flights within the United States and access secure federal facilities and military bases. To date, the California DMV has issued 4.1 million REAL ID driver licenses and identification cards. After updated guidance from DHS, the DMV is mailing letters to REAL ID cardholders who submitted one proof of residency when they applied for a federal compliant driver license and identification card. When cardholders receive the letter, they simply need to verify their address, sign and date the document, and send it back in the prepaid envelope provided. This will satisfy the second residency requirement for REAL ID, and no return visit to a DMV office will be necessary. Californians are now required to submit two different documents when applying for a REAL ID driver license or identification card. To apply, individuals must visit a DMV office and bring the following documents: One Proof of Identity Original or Certified (Ex: Valid passport, birth certificate, etc.) One Proof of Social Security Number Two Proofs of California Residency Paper Copies (Ex: Utility bill, cell phone bill, bank statement) For a complete list of acceptable documents, visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov. Customers are encouraged to fill out the online driver license application before their office visit at eDLapp.dmv.ca.gov. Sacramento The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that it will grant an extension on REAL ID compliance to April 1, 2019. This extension allows all valid California driver licenses and identification cards to continue to be accepted for federal purposes, such as boarding commercial aircraft and entering federal facilities. This extension, however, most likely will not be reflected on the DHS website until the partial federal furlough ends.

Sacramento As holiday shoppers crowd store and mall parking lots, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds Californians to Save the Space designated for disabled individuals who legally display disabled person parking placards. With parking at a premium during the holiday season, it is important to remember that misusing a disabled person parking placard is not only against the law, but it negatively impacts the mobility of those with disabilities, DMV... Director Jean Shiomoto said. The DMV is committed to curbing fraud and will give offenders the gift of a citation. So, I ask you to save the space. In November 2018, DMV investigators caught 132 people fraudulently using disabled person parking placards during 21 enforcement operations throughout the state. Offenders had their placard confiscated and were issued a misdemeanor citation that carries a fine that ranges from $250 to $1,000. Since July 1, 2018, DMV investigators have verified 8,596 disabled person parking placards and found 881 being misused.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 21, 2018 345 People Caught Abusing Disabled Parking Placards at Los Angeles County Fair Four enforcement operations held at Pomona Fairplex Pomona A series of enforcement operations held at the Los Angeles County Fair has resulted in 345... citations being issued to abusers of disabled person parking placards. During four operations held at this year’s fair, DMV investigators verified that 1,955 visitors using disabled person parking placards were doing so legally. The statistics reveal that one of every six people were fraudulently using a placard. Offenders had their placards confiscated and given a citation that carries a fine between $250 and $1,000. We want the public to know that a person who is assigned a disabled parking placard is the only one who can legally use it, said DMV Investigations Chief Tom Wilson. Our goal is to achieve compliance through education and enforcement, and we ask those without a disability to save the space. This is the second year that the DMV has conducted enforcement operations at the L.A. County Fair. Of the 2,754 placards verified during five enforcement operations last year, investigators caught 477 people misusing them. We want all of our guests at the LA County Fair to have an enjoyable experience. This begins when you arrive, said Miguel A. Santana, Fairplex President and CEO. If there is someone illegally taking a parking spot from a guest with a disabled parking placard, we want to know about it. Those spots are designed for those who need them. So, we are happy to assist the DMV in making sure everyone is following the law. It is important to note that not every disability is visible and allegations of misuse of a disabled parking placard may be unfounded. The level of reported or observed misuse of disabled parking placards varies from area to area. Most violations involve people using disabled parking placards issued to family or friends to avoid paying parking fees, as well as obtaining convenient and/or unrestricted parking. California Vehicle Code Section 4461(b) (c) prohibits anyone from lending their placard, knowingly permitting the use of their placard or allowing anyone else to use it while they are not present. In addition, individuals cannot display a disabled parking placard that is not issued to them or that has been canceled or revoked. Anyone who suspects a person may be misusing a disabled person placard is urged to report it using an online complaint form or by contacting their local DMV Investigations office. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ See more
