Proud to call you Family! Living so far from home we don’t have a lot of family around us. Dimitris family is mostly in Greece and mine mostly on the East Coast. Last week we got to enjoy the surprise warmth and generosity of some cousins. We were blessed to receive some wonderful homemade Greek themed face masks for our staff from my cousin Trish in Minnesota. Notice the fabulous Santorini fabric. Trish is a person who leads & lives her life with love, strength, generosity..., and honesty. We also had a wonderful surprise visit from my little cousin Thomaswell not so little anymore! I hadn’t seen him in maybe 20 years, and it was a delight to see that he has grown into a vibrant, interesting, kind, and amazing young man. It was wonderful to break bread with him. Being so far from family we consider our customers, employees, and friends our extended family. Thank you all for enriching our lives and sharing your families & lives with us. We know it is hard to face so many things in these challenging times personally, professionally, and globally. It seems every day brings about a new crisis in our lives or in the world. ... OUR RECIPE: We limit how much news we take in. We face what we can and what we need to. We let the rest go. We make a conscious effort to face the issues at hand with neutrality and positivity. We STOP ourselves from getting triggered by anger or fear. We find some peace and some joy every day. We become the eye of the storm and not the chaos around it. Social Creatures I have seen the slogan #ALONETOGETHER and I retort #TOGETHERAPART. The concept, while understandable can boggle the mind. Never underestimate the importance of personal interaction. Even talking to someone on the phone or video chatting with them helps us stay connected. We are social beings by nature (even the most introverted of us) and we need interaction with others. Just a friendly glance from behind the face covering on a walk in the neighborhood, or ...a simple hello to another person is worth a trip to the market. We can see in the faces of our customers the happiness of just being on the boulevard in the open air and enjoying a meal (that they didn’t cook or have to clean up after) , connecting with others, observing life and passersby in person is also a vital part of their well-being. For me, to be released from the isolation bubble with some safely practiced socialization brings about a healthy dose of sanity. So, Cheers to chatting with someone other than work on zoom, to safe social gatherings, to long walks in the neighborhood, to haircuts under the outdoor tent and to Al Fresco dining or venturing out to pick up take out. SPARTAN WARRIORS & COVID-19 I have copied below an excerpt from an article by Steven Pressfield (a favorite author of ours) who wrote about the Spartan Warriors and how they would have handled COVID-19. A true question from antiquity:... Why do the Spartans punish with a fine a warrior who loses his helmet or breastplate in combat but punish with death the man who discards his shield? The true answer, from Plutarch: Because helmet and breastplate are worn to protect the individual alone, but the shield is borne to protect the whole line. In ancient phalanx-type warfare, the formation advanced upon the enemy with shields overlapping, so that one warrior’s shield protected himself and, partially, the man next to him. The aim was to present to the foe an unbroken, impregnable front of armor. The enemy’s objective of course was to break through this front, to create a breach into which his forces could flow. One failed shield and the whole army could be lost. Now a question from the war you and I are fighting today: Why are we asked to wear surgical or face masks in public, to practice social distancing, and to observe self-quarantining? Answer: Because these practices are not for the individual alone but for the protection of the whole line. International Gratitude Day Yesterday was international Gratitude Day! Woo Hoo. I love that every day has some extra special purpose. Personally, Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is a favorite (August 4) but let’s get back to gratitude. In many religions there are prayers of thanks. In today’s world we often hear about having an Attitude of Gratitude. When I am giving thanks and in a state of gratitude, I like to get specific with it. When I say I am grateful for my family & friends... I pick out specific people and qualities about them or things they have done that I am grateful for. When I focus on my home, I get specific about what it provides me that I am grateful for. It is easy to get swept up in negative chatter about what needs fixing or what we don’t like about our living space. It is far too easy to get irritated with people, work etc. But if we can focus on what we are grateful for in different aspects of our lives then we can change our relationship to it. We can live more peacefully. That my friends is a good thing. Dimitris and I are grateful for our dedicated and talented employees. So many employees from the past still send a Christmas Card, visit us when they are in town and call or text from time to time. We have been through a lot together and are blessed that Le Petit Greek is part of their journey. Dimitris is graced to be God Father to 5 employee’s kids and has been best man at two of their weddings. We are incredibly grateful to our customers. You have been generous and supportive to us for 32 years and now more than ever we feel your love. Just this weekend a wonderful customer came to eat. She had come last week and confessed that when she saw Dimitris looking worn out, she came back this week to check in on him and was happy that he was looking much better. Another customer/friend took the time to share a photo of our son from an event when he was about 5 years old (now 18) as our kids went to elementary school together. These are just two tiny stories of thousands that warm our hearts and give us an abundance of gratitude daily for our customers. While we are at it, we are always incredibly grateful for chocolate chip cookies. I never met a chocolate chip cookie I didn’t like. Ha, Ha, Ha. Planting Seeds Of Kindness Plant your seeds of kindness and do not pull them out of the earth to see if they have started to grow. Let them gestate. If you continue to nurture your thoughts, words and deeds in consciousness, sincerity, peace & compassion then the fruits of your labors will be there for you when you need them. You will not have to question. Do not be set back by the ego’s tricks and false thinking. As the sun comes up daily, so should your acts of kindness a...nd reflection be repeated. Just as instructed on the shampoo bottle. Lather, rinse & repeat. At the end of each day I ask myself what my challenges and my triumphs were. In the morning I set forth a plan to commit a random act of kindness. I like to commit at least one a day, but my goal is always 3. It can be as simple as holding the door open for someone or allowing someone else to go in front of you in line at the store or bank. It can be safely picking up trash that was not yours and properly disposing of it. I like my acts of kindness to be unknown, simple gestures that elevate how we interact with the world and each other. It’s really easy to get caught up in what isn’t working in life. Worries, fears and irritations take very little effort. Plotting kindness is incredibly rewarding and forces our focus on what really is important in life which is how we interact and experience life overall. That doesn’t mean I ignore what isn’t working, I just practice not letting it be the center of my focus. As the Ancient Greek Philosopher Socrates said, The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new. You Brighten Our Day! A neighbor friend texted the other day from her work at a hospital and was telling me one of the patients was telling her how much she loved our restaurant and while she doesn’t live in Larchmont vicinity she will travel just to eat at Le Petit Greek. What she didn’t know was that it was Dimitris Birthday and that was just about the best birthday gift ever. There is a lot that weighs heavy on all of our shoulders, but these small gestures give us strength and joy. Thank you everyone for brightening our days and nights with your support and kindness.

Outdoor Dining in Greece Our fondest memories are of eating beautiful meals in Greece outdoor at the Tavernas known for Fresh Fish or Spit Fire Grilled Meats with Family & Friends. The sides that accompany those meals were vast and endless. To name a few there were savory crisp spanakopita, dips of whipped caviar (Tarama), yogurt and cucumber (tzatziki), fava beans with onions and olive oil. There was Gigantes- large beans in a tomato broth, quickly fried sardines you eat l...ike French fries, grilled prawns , stuffed tomatoes with rice , lemon potatoes, fried seasoned keftedes ( meatballs) Horta - steamed dandelion greens with olive oil and lemon, fresh beats with their greens, cabbage salads and of course a mouthwatering Horiatiki salad of cucumbers, tomatoes with feta, capers and olives. There was no more room to eat but then huge platters of fresh catch would come or the large platters of grilled lamb chops, pork, and various cuts of beautifully, grilled meats. Everything eaten family style. Because pleasing your palate entailed gathering and arranging your plate how you like. Most restaurants have outdoor seating in Greece because of the beautiful climate but also because it is under the heavens that we should rejoice and commune with family and friends. Our outdoor dining at Le Petit Greek has for 32 years been the most coveted seating at the restaurant and I hope the Al Fresco program Los Angeles has offered restaurants as a lifeline during these times remains. We are far too often indoors on technology and isolated from life. Sitting outside, looking at the sky and floating clouds of the day or the twinkling stars and glowing night moon, listening to the birds, looking at the trees, & people watching the families, friends and lovers pass by. Dining al fresco allows us an opportunity to expand our awareness of our surroundings and gratitude for the meal, the people in our lives and all the wonders of the world that abound us. We may not be on holiday in Greece, but our imagination can take us there. Enjoy some photos of Al Fresco seating in Greece.
