Lee's Hoagie House

Today I got my smile back because these last few weeks not to mention months have been hard as hell especially now with all the racial tension going on all over... the country. Well today my training company BODY COUTURE PERSONAL FITNESS is officially re-opened since we were forced to shut down because of the Pandemic. The other thing that made me smile today was this guy here Lee of "Lee's Hoagie House" here in Pasadena, CA. I've been knowing Lee close to 10 years now and I've always supported his business because for 1. It hands down has some of the best damn food in all of Pasadena! 2. Is because of him he's just so damn cool and full of positive energy and the atmosphere of the diner is a vibe all its own! He's the type of business owner that makes it his business to get to know you personally... If you frequent at Lee's long enough eventually he and his whole staff will learn and address you by name and even learn what you like to eat. Well since the self-quarantine a lot of businesses went under so being an business owner myself I made it my business to go eat at all of the mom & pop places I always go to to help keep them afloat during this time. Well today I went to go eat at Lee's for the first time in a very long time, on any other day I would be on my way inside and by the time I hit the door Lee and I are at each other with our usual banter and shenanigans!! Today was very different... Way different you could almost cut the air with a knife. Now If you don't know anything about Pasadena, CA let me inform you Pasadena is a very affluent predominately white town 52% to be exact! Afro-Americans make up almost less than 10% of the population. I say that to say not many of my kind frequent here unless you know about this place. But today like any other day I go in and it's a packed house i.e, (Regular Patrons, a few walk-ins and way in the back of the house is a group of "Pasadena's Finest" boys in blue) sitting at their usual table in the back. Now before all of this #BLM movement I'd usually be the only black person there when I go to eat and I'd be so comfortable to eat and hang out with Lee but today was different way different... Today for the first time "EVER" I felt so out of place. So as I approached the counter he shouted out 2 of my usuals according to what time of day it is and like always he was dead on! As I was paying for my order we both knew something was off and it was... But this wasn't the time to address it so after the transaction was done I hurried off to my usual table and waited for my food to come. The food arrived less than 15 minutes later and when I got it I started eating, I was only a couple of bites in when I just couldn't eat anymore I completely loss my appetite... Funny because I was starving before I got there so I got the rest to go and went to use the bathroom before I headed out. Once I was finished and washed my hands I started to walk towards my table to get my food but instead of being on the table it was waiting for me at the counter so I redirected my stride and made a B-line to the counter instead. I put back on my "I CAN'T BREATH' mask, grabbed my food and as I was heading out the door I threw up the deuces and hollered like I always do "See you guys!" I was about 4 feet away from my car when I heard someone yell my name "Thai... Tyree... wait!" I quickly turned around to see who was calling me and even worse knows me by my government name it was Lee!! He smiled and took a real deep breath and long pause looked me dead in my eyes and grabbed my hand and said Thai "YOUR LIFE MATTERS TO ME... YOU MATTER TO ME!" and I thank and love you brother then he grabbed me and violated all of my personal space with the biggest bear hug ever! I fought hard to keep my composure but the shit had me tear up so bad because he knew exactly how I felt and why I was feeling that way! Makes me feel really good to know that all of the places I frequent and give my hard earned money to accept and appreciate what and who I am! There are good people and there are bad people... There are "GOOD cops and there are BAD cops!" Lee of "LEE'S HOAGIE HOUSE" and all of his staff are "GOOD" people so If you're ever in Pasadena, CA go and grab something delicious to eat at this establishment I can promise you it will be an experience you'd always remember.
