This has been a difficult few weeks for the Learning Rights family. Two weeks ago our beloved interpreter, Bernadette Buckley, passed away. She was the voice of Learning Rights for families in Oxnard, was amazing with parents and patient and helpful with our staff. She began working on Oxnard cases in 2016, and in the five years since has spent thousands of hours working with parents and frequently working with Learning Rights’ Executive Director and Founder Janeen Steel. Wit...hout her hard work and compassion, the many victories we have achieved for families in Oxnard would not have been possible. She was also a frequent translator for our TIGER program, and built friendships with TIGER parents and staff. She will be sorely missed by everyone who was lucky enough to work with her. A memorial service has not yet been set up, but we will pass on any relevant information once it is available. Unfortunately this was not the only difficult news last week. Jesus Montoya, husband of Suaya Montoya, passed away two weeks ago. Suaya and her sons Manolo and Antonio have been mainstays of the TIGER Program for years, and Manolo and Antonio have performed at A Cause For Celebration and spoken at TIGER Town Hall. Jesus was loved deeply by his family and we are heartbroken with them. We know this has been a year filled with loss for many of us, but we share the Montoya family GoFundMe in hopes that we can ease the burden of funeral and medical costs. Suaya and her sons have been dedicated supporters of Learning Rights and the TIGER Program, and we are going to do everything we can to support them during this difficult time.

Giving Tuesday is only a few days away! Together we can positively impact the lives of thousands of economically disadvantaged children and their families. Learning Rights is deeply saddened to hear the news that Alex Trebek passed away early this morning. Alex and his family have been incredibly generous in supporting our work and the families we serve, and we were so lucky to witness Alex's wit and the joy he brought to his family and everyone he interacted with. We wish all the best to Jean and the rest of the Trebek family, and ask that you hold them in your hearts tonight.
