The three guilty verdicts in the murder trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd is a sigh of relief. Relief that maybe, just maybe, our nation is at a turning point. Maybe we are ready to face what so many have been marching, kneeling, and dying for, for centuries. There is hope that this is the first step toward true systemic and cultural change for our nation. The road ahead is a long one. It’s bumpy, it has potholes, and it is uphill, but... it can be traversed. While there has been a global sigh of relief that a shred of justice has been served, we should also be fully aware that there is a mountain of social justice work to do, and reparations to be made for our Black communities. This is a start, but we are far from the finish line. Together, we can move forward and work toward that day when all of us will know that the phrase justice for all truly includes all of us.
