Remember to reach out to others during this season. Not only for them but for your wellbeing too. Many of us are spending them alone, without loved ones or family; or amidst a separation, divorce or loss. This time of year can increase symptoms of depression and anxiety in us. The seasonal change we have in California can be very hard on those of us who are affected by inclement weather.... Tips to keep yourself from falling into depression or pulling yourself out: Set yourself a daily schedule to include at least 10 minutes of something fun! Use Playdoh, play your favorite music and shake your buns like no one is watching, bake, take mindful walks, pick up an instrument, color, paint, volunteer, read, etc. Focus on what is happening in that very moment using your senses. What do I hear? Smell? Feel? Taste? And see? Focus on the tiniest details of a flower or leaf or the grain of a table or pattern you see. Listen to guided meditation for positivity. Reach out!

Went to Mexico this weekend and met an artist. I asked him to make these for Mindful Transcendence and I think they are absolutely amazing. The image is my beautiful daughter, Aubreigh.
Mindful Transcendence is a multifaceted company which not only includes Psychotherapeutic and Supervision services but also Art Therapy, Mindfulness Meditation, and Program Design. So what does that mean? Well, I have utilized a foundation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and strategically added heaping spoonfuls of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Problem-Solving Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to create a holistic approach to pro...viding a safe space to share, uncovering the WHYs of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and all in a manner that allows for fun, peace, and strength. The first tip is to find a therapist you feel comfortable with, allows you to be your authentic self, and respects your journey. No judgment allowed. A good therapist will give you the tools necessary to manage symptoms as you go through the process of discovery, changing, and healing, so that you feel prepared and not overwhelmed or abandoned. Therapy can be empowering and not scary, so find someone who makes you comfortable, safe but will also challenge you to push through the tough stuff. The first psychoeducational and experiential program written by me is Rapid Resilience I and II. Stay tuned for more details...

...no matter what, STAY KIND... having or showing a friendly, generous, and considerate nature. Too often we encounter individuals who do not practice or exude kindness, and when that occurs, how does it affect us? Many will give them grace with the assumption that they are likely experiencing something difficult in their own life. This is the benefit of the doubt. But what about those who intentionally make unkind remarks, gestures or behaviors? How do we respond in a man...ner that honors our values, self worth, and esteem? Assertiveness is often the answer. Assertiveness is neither passive or aggressive. It means stating our desire or need without disrespecting the other person or violating their boundaries. Example: I was on the phone with an internet company twice this week asking to transfer the account into my name only, relieving my exhusband from the burden of responsibility. Both times I was met with aggressive tones and passive aggressive words. Passive: "okay, thank you." With this response, my needs are not going to be met. I am also not honoring my self worth. Passive Aggressive: "Fine, whatever you say. It doesn't really matter what I want." This response may confuse the recipient or establish guilt, but my needs are likely still not going to be met. Aggressive: "This is ridiculous! Let me talk a manager right now!" This will get everyone up in arms, defensive, and likely lead to hostility. If my needs are met, it will only be due to fear of escalation. Assertive: "This is not going to work for me. I am requesting that you honor the established deal. If this is something you are unable to provide, I will want to speak to a manager. Thank you." Finally, this response makes my needs or request very clear. The recipient knows my expectation and I have not insulted anyone or dishonored myself in the process. Take time today to pay attention to your words and body language. Later, reflect on areas for change and areas to be commended.
