Big Saver Foods on Artesia Boulevard and Orange Avenue in North Long Beach is providing Jordan High School students with on-the-job training in the supermarket industry. Big Saver is the latest local business or community organization to join the Long Beach Unified School District’s Youth Employment Network (YEN). I’m impressed with how eager these young students are to work at the store, said Big Saver Store Manager Sergio Rangel. We’re pleased to be able to help local yo...uth by giving them a chance to develop their job skills. Students are learning about bagging groceries, stocking, baking and how to talk to customers. YEN students receive pre-employment skills training through on-the-job experience, college and technical trade school exploration, resume writing and other services that help them find and retain employment. For more information about the Jordan YEN business partnership program, contact Karena Agis, Job Developer, 568-986-6870, ext. 489.

The Long Beach Unified School District’s Youth Employment Network marked the tenth year of its annual Interview Bootcamp at the Lakewood Mall in 2014, where 40 business partners conducted job interviews with more than 100 LBUSD students. As part of the school district’s effort to help prepare all students for success in college and careers, more than 540 interviews were scheduled, with each student participating in four to eight interviews. The Youth Employment Network focuses on helping high school students and graduates successfully transition from school to the business environment. For more information, call the school district’s Transition Partnership Program at 986-6870, ext. 262.
