We're live for our first Know Your Power session with John Silva, the Senior Director of Education and Training at the The News Literacy Project. This session covers: What It Means to be News-Literate: Key Skills to be Reliably Informed... The amount of information, and misinformation, we encounter every day can be overwhelming. News literacy is the ability to determine what is credible and what is not, and to use the standards of authoritative, fact-based journalism in deciding what to trust, share and act on. By recognizing a few key news literacy skills and habits, you can be more confident that you are being reliably informed and less susceptible to misinformation. You can learn more about The News Literacy Project at newslit.org For more information on our upcoming Know Your Power sessions visit lbpm.org

This week, the Pew Research Center published a report revealing that 18% of U.S. adults say they rely on social media for political and election news. The report concludes that: "Those who rely on social media for news are less likely to get the facts right about the coronavirus and politics and more likely to hear some unproven claims." Read the full report > pewresearch.org Want to check on your own news literacy? This Wednesday, August 5th, we'll be hosting a session with John Silva, the Senior Director of Education and Training at the The News Literacy Project. To RSVP visit > lbpm.org

We believe that an informed and engaged public is essential for the well-being of a democratic society. Yet, the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter uprisings are exposing stark information gaps for many in Long Beach and our neighboring Harbor communities. We want to help change that, so we've launched a Citizens Media series to equip you with the basic skills you’ll need to think critically and hold your local government accountable. Kicking off Wednesday, August 5th,... with The News Literacy Project these three free online sessions will feature experts who will show you how you can build power by applying the rights, responsibilities and best practices of a 21st-century citizen into your everyday life. It’s time for the public to reclaim the narrative for all. It’s time to train each other how to be the media that is missing. Be the media that is missing. Know Your Power. RSVP > lbpm.org
