Just surrounded by salons I can’t use. Missing the peaceful month we got to work at @saulinosmithsalon. Plexiglass in between everything, the cleanest anyone’s ever worked, even though we are already better trained in sanitation than probably any other non-medical job. So many salons are going to close over this, it makes me so sad. @cagovernor there is evidence that salons are safe with masks and proper sanitation. Please either allow salons to open, or salons need financial support. #saveoursalons @ Saulino Smith Salon

Actual footage of California hairstylists fending for ourselves doing hair in the elements this summer. Except picture record heat waves instead of a storm. For reals though, either we need to be all shut down along with restaurants where people aren’t wearing masks, or we are going to continue proper disinfection and mask wearing, right? Most hairstylists cannot do much hair outside, especially since most of us make most of our money on color. Why don’t you make outdoor h...ousecalls for color temporarily legal for independent contractors/ stylists with business licenses, liability insurance, etc (although we are ALL educated better than most professions about sanitation.) Most salons don’t have the ability or space to move fully outside. There is evidence to support that with proper mask wearing the risk is low. Look at the stylists in Missouri that were symptomatic and still didn’t infect any clients. Also it is SO easy to trace anyone who was in contact with someone else in a salon, we even have assigned stations! You could never track people in a restaurant like that. Either close EVERYTHING down if it’s that bad, or let people follow health guidelines and up our contact tracing and testing. I’m down to get tested weekly if you make that easier!! Made it to the top five in America for the @precisioncuttingchampionships! This is my final entry, showing a classic technique. Square line. Forever favorite/humbling every time. #pcchampionshipna.

Loving how much having long dark hair makes me appreciate how far I’ve come and how much I’ve grown since the last time I looked like this student version of me (which was in college, I cut it off in cosmo school, as you do). Part of the reason I dyed it dark was to celebrate getting accepted into grad school! I’ll be pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Psychology at Antioch in the fall, and I’m so excited about their commitment to social justice and history that reflects that. I... have been so depressed this year with everything going on, as I know so many people are, and it’s more important than ever to focus on mental health and learn about racial and social justice. I want to be a marriage and sex therapist who is sensitive and attuned to the needs of all different kinds of people. Antioch has an LGBTQ affirming specialty I have my eye on, and/or a spirituality and depth program that could maybe force me to finally incorporate meditation into my life. (I’m a believer but a procrastinator) Also, I will never EVER stop doing hair, but I’m just calling a spade a spade. I had no business messing with bleach in high school, I needed training. Now I’m having deep coachings with clients and friends right and left and I take seriously my role as sometimes the only person someone can tell. I am a safe nonjudgmental place for everyone’s dirty little secret. And this pandemic made everything stand still and get super clear for me. (And made me feel insecure about my job security) I have always been a therapist, and just I want to be a better one. I have always done hair as my art and a way of connecting with friends, and I might find a way to combine the two (Hairapy lives to see the day, mom and dad! -that’s how I convinced them cosmetology school was a good idea after a BA in psychology from UCLA). I might simply have found a way to sit half the day and stand half the day in a career where many of my friends have occupational health problems. But it feels right. Also I am LOVING my new salon @saulinosmithsalon, and I’m there Wednesday’s-Saturdays and will continue working full time because that’s my shit I’m truly loving seeing my clients again and appreciate you xo, Lauren Sill See more

The more I read the more I realize how little of this history I really fully understood the ramifications of. This is a great, simple explanation of why systemic reform is necessary.
