I’m sitting next to one of my senior couples; he’s 94, she 96. She bumped her wrist and I said to her husband, kiss it and make it better. He did and they both laughed. She said oh, we used to do that when we were younger. Glad I could encourage playfulness.

I was working today with a Dementia client at a senior home and she goes between Spanish and English when she speaks. I must admit that I try not to show it but it can feel a little frustrating and I often feel like I’m not getting through or making a difference. Then something happened when I told her that I would see her later this week; in a moment of clarity and in English, she tells me Thank you for all that you do, I really appreciate it and God will truly bless you .... I thanked her and could feel tears well up as I left. If you ever have the privilege of spending time with someone with Dementia, Alzheimer’s or any other condition where communication is limited, please engage with them as you would anyone else, they’re still there inside and they know when you’re being kind and they do appreciate your engagement even if they can’t always communicate it.
