MAX HUNTSMAN OMITS THE FACTS ONCE AGAIN October 5, 2020 Today, I learned of the latest Office of Inspector General (OIG) report. ... Conspicuously absent from the report is the fact the OIG had multiple opportunities to address the Banditos issue during the four years under my predecessor but chose to remain silent. This is because his job as a political appointee is to do whatever the Board instructs him to do. Mr. Huntsman now claims the past is the present, while willfully omitting all of the progress which has been made. His actions are purely politically driven and an attempt to undermine the reputation of the Department. The report alleges investigators did not conduct a thorough investigation into the Kennedy Hall deputy on deputy fight. This is false. Both criminal and administrative investigations were conducted where investigators interviewed over 70 involved parties and witnesses in the case. In addition, this case was submitted to the District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division (JSID) for their review and their office concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The facts are that immediately after taking office, I relieved the East Los Angeles Station captain of his command, overhauled the entire leadership of the station, and transferred 36 personnel. In February of 2020, I became the first and only sheriff to successfully implement a policy specifically addressing employee groups which violate the rights of other employees or members of the public. 3-01/050.83. Employee Groups which Violate Rights of Other Employees or Members of the Public (http://pars.lasd.org/Viewer/Manuals/10008/Content/14944) On August 13, 2020, at the conclusion of the Kennedy Hall fight between deputies investigation, I held a press conference to publish the results of the investigation for the public. Twenty-six deputies involved in that early morning fight were either suspended or terminated. As has become his pattern, Mr. Huntsman seems to have once again intentionally omitted facts which do not further his political agenda. 11 year old Max Durfee and his 8 year old brother Carson decided this past weekend that they needed to do something to raise money to help the injured @lasdtran...sit Deputies that were attacked at a @metrolosangeles train station on Saturday 9/12. They came up with a clever idea of making craft sodas and selling them on the corner near their home. 2 days and several hundred customers later, they had surpassed their $300. goal and sold over $1100. worth of product. Today, with the news cameras from @knbc4 and @abc7la rolling, they presented their donation directly to @lacosheriff. A grateful and frankly taken aback Sheriff Villanueva humbly accepted the hard earned donation and praised the boys and their parents for their generosity and civic mindedness. Keep it up boys. We have badges with your names on them someday! #civicduty #lasd #defendthepolice #weneverquit #bettertogether #communityengagement

To those protesting at South LA Sheriff’s Station: We support the community wanting to protest, to peacefully exercise their 1st Amendment rights. However, we... are concerned there are individuals from outside of the community, and state, wanting to incite riots. Those individuals have already committed acts of vandalism, looting and assaults utilizing rocks, pipes and mortars. Everyone’s public safety is our priority. If you are in the area, please be aware of your surroundings so that you are not hurt by those inciting violence. #StaySafe

Go Safely, California: September is Pedestrian Safety Month September is Pedestrian Safety Month and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will join law e...nforcement agencies across the state to educate the public on how to be safe when walking or driving. While the COVID-19 pandemic and wildfire emergencies have had an impact on Californians, the safety of pedestrians remains a cause for concern. Since 2009, the number of pedestrians killed or injured on California roads has increased dramatically, accounting for nearly 25% of all roadway deaths. A report released earlier this year by the Governors Highway Association (GHSA) projected that pedestrian deaths in 2019 reached the highest point in more than 30 years. More people are out walking, exercising and doing what they can to spend a little time outdoors after spending so much time inside staying at home, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Sergeant, Robert Hill said. Looking out for one another is the least we can do during these difficult times. For the safety of everyone walking or driving, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will have additional deputies on patrol throughout the month of September specifically looking for violations made by drivers and pedestrians that make roads unsafe. These violations include speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield, not stopping for signs or signals, and pedestrians who do not cross in marked crosswalks or designated crossing areas. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department offers steps drivers and pedestrians can take to be safe: Pedestrians Ditch the distractions. Keep your eyes up and phones down, especially when crossing the street. Always use marked crosswalks, preferably at stop signs or signals. Make eye contact and nod or wave at drivers. A quick nod or wave is an easy way to let a driver know you see them, and they see you. Be extra careful crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night when it is harder to see. Get in the habit of walking with a flashlight or wearing a reflective vest so it is easier for drivers to spot you. If you need to briefly walk into the street to maintain social distancing on sidewalks, remember to look both ways for cars. Drivers Slow down on busy streets and at intersections. Avoid distractions, which includes cell phones, eating, using in-dash touch screens, or turning to talk to passengers. Be extra careful approaching crosswalks. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians. Stop prior to the crosswalk. Try to avoid blocking the crosswalk when making a right-hand turn. Have your headlights on and slow down at night when pedestrians are difficult to see. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
