SAFE DRIVING TIP!!!!! This type of fog is native to the San Joaquin Valley and normally starts following the first heavy rain of the season. Although we, as res...idents of the Central Valley, have become accustomed to this weather, it remains the leading cause of weather-related deaths in California. Here are a few tips from the California Highway Patrol regarding driving in poor weather: ~When driving in fog, it is important to keep your speed slow and safe. It is my general rule to drive at a speed slow enough to stop safely if there were any obstructions in the roadway ahead of me. ~As you are driving, pick a spot in the road, or a sign off the side of the road and begin counting seconds until you pass that landmark. Be sure to have at least three seconds worth of visibility in order to avoid tragedy. If traffic ahead of you is stopped, with proper visibility, you will be able to stop before becoming involved in a collision. ~When fog is present, the roadway is normally wet. Keep in mind your stopping distance will be increased. It is always important to ensure everyone in your vehicle is properly restrained before beginning to drive. This fact holds true, especially with inclement weather. ~It is commonplace during times of dense fog for officers of the California Highway Patrol to pace traffic through certain areas. California Vehicle Code Section 21706 orders drivers following emergency vehicles with emergency lights activated to have a following distance of 300 feet or greater. ~It is extremely important to stay behind these vehicles. Pacing is performed when there is a foreseeable danger to the motoring public. ~If you pass the pacing vehicle, you are not only increasing your chances of being issued a citation, but you are also opening yourself up to being involved in a collision. ~Remember, the main reason for traveling is to get to your destination safely. Be sure to keep your speed safe, following distance adequate and keep all occupants in your vehicle properly restrained at all times. ~As always, follow all traffic laws, make sure all occupants in your vehicle are secured properly, never drink and drive, stay off the phone and drive safe.
