Nikki Grimes (b. 1950) began publishing her poetry as a teenager, and was mentored by writer James Baldwin. She is the author of many award-winning books for children and young adults, including Garvey’s Choice and Poems in the Attic. Her memoir Ordinary Hazards was released in 2019 and received the ALA Michael Printz Honor Award. She was also awarded the 2003 Coretta Scott King Award for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions.
