Summer used to be full of these... Supracondylar Humerus Fractures are the most common elbow #fractures in children. They generally occur after a fall on an outstretched arm where the paper thin bone adjacent to the olecranon fossa can snap after a fall from monkey bars or trampolines. Really bad ones (like this) can be associated with #nerve or #vascular injury. Treatment is almost always performed with a closed #reduction that's then held in place with sharp steel pins dri...lled through the skin and into the bones stabilizing the fracture. Kids never see or feel the pins since they're also placed into a cast for additional protection. After 3-4 weeks the cast and pins come out in the office and we slowly return to full activity once again. This family tracked me down and drove 2+ hours to see me in my new office on the one year anniversary of his #Gartland Type 3 #supracondylar #humerus fracture that had an associated anterior #interosseous nerve #palsy that thankfully returned spontaneously about 5 weeks after injury. So much healing in a year- can hardly tell it was broken!
