No woman should have to birth alone, yet the right to have support during labor and birth by a partner or doula is being stripped away in hospitals due to COVID...-19 precautions. As if facing COVID-19 and social distancing wasn’t enough to worry about, this is causing pregnant women incredible anxiety - and even despair - at a time when they should be able to prepare to welcome their baby. While there is a lack of definitive evidence of increased infection risk from having a partner or doula present in labor or at birth, there is evidence of increased risk to the mother and baby from lack of adequate emotional, psychological, and physical support during labor, including longer and more painful labor, greater need for pain medication, interventions, and cesarean section. Further, lack of perinatal support is associated with greater risk of postpartum depression. These risks are further increased for people of color, who are already at higher risk of perinatal complications. Today I am launching the #Ideservebirthsupport campaign in order to raise awareness of a woman’s right to have support during her labor + birth experience and in turn, have hospitals recognize that labor and birth support is a proven, important factor in the health of mothers, babies, and thus, families. Your help is really needed. If you can, I would love your support. Here's how: 1. Post a photo that depicts your birth journey (pregnant, in labor, birthing, you and your baby after birth, etc.) and explain in the caption why having support during your labor and delivery was so integral to your health. 2. Use the hashtag #ideservebirthsupport and tag me @avivaromm 3. If you’re feeling the birth activist spirit, contact the COO of your hospital, anyone you know in media, your mayor, your governor, your state senator, and ask your OB or midwife to advocate for you. Explain why birth support is so essential for your wellbeing, and the health of your baby and family. And while it may feel like you’re alone right now, please know, you are not. Tomorrow, on my next Women’s Wellness Office Hours at 2 PM ET I’m going to share how I and other women are going to support you through this time.

Have you talked to the people who will be in your birth space about how to actually hold space? As doulas, we see guests in the birth room doing allllll kinds ...of things to disrupt the energy and concentration that it takes to find the rhythm and ritual laboring folks need to tap into their best coping abilities. - Have you considered hiring a doula or taking a Comfort Measures Class (next one is Dec 14th at Biggest Little Baby) to help support everyone so they can support you? - It is really common for partners to rely on the pregnant person to tell them what they need. Once someone is in active labor they move out of the cognitive side of their brain and trying to bring them back to that space can make it really hard for them to get through those contractions. - @byron.babymoon - #PregnantInReno #PositiveVibes #YouHaveThePower #PositiveBirth #KnowYourStrength #ButYoureABadass #YouCanHandleIt #CalmConfidentInControl #BirthPreparation #YouMakeTheRules #SelfCompassion #GetItGirl #YouAreInControl #YouveGotThis #Slay #birthprep #BelieveInYourself #PepTalk #reno #renochildbirth #birthsupport #renodoulas #primedpregnancy #renoNV #comfortmeasures #partnersupport See more

Are you offering virtual postpartum doula visits? Here are some ideas for a check in the first 5 days after baby arrives. Postpartum Doula support is most ben...eficial in person. Since that is not an option in many areas right now we can still offer virtual support. Our expertise benefits and normalizes the early days and beyond for parents. See more

You’re not alone. I know it may feel that way. Please reach out, phone a friend...this too shall pass Mama. "This is not what you had planned. This is not what you’d envisioned. There are no visits from friends, no loving doula bringing you soup, no mommy and me yoga classes, no coffee dates, no stroller walks through the park. There is empty space where you had planned comfort and company. There are long days with no one but your little one to talk to and this b...ig transition to navigate all alone. I know it’s lonely, mama. I know the walls of your house feel tight and the days feel so long, and you crave a warm hand on your knee and the soft embrace of a friend. You wish for someone by your side to marvel at this beautiful baby of yours and to wrap an arm around you when the feelings get too big and scary. We were never meant to do this alone. Motherhood has never been a solitary sport. And yet here we are, in this odd chapter of isolation and distance, with no choice but to do it by ourselves. But mama, know this- We are alone. Together. You are surrounded all the other mothers who are navigating this tender time in isolation. You are held by all of us who have walked the path before you and who know how much you must be hurting. You are wrapped in the warm embrace of mama earth, as she too settles into this time of slowness and healing. This too shall pass. And when it does, hugs and coffee dates and visits from friends will taste so much sweeter. Soft kisses on your cheek and arms around your waist and gentle laughter in your ear will be the joyful medicine after this trying time. Until then, hunker down mama. Find the coziest, warmest spot on your couch, sink into the pile of unfolded laundry, and sleep the Spring away, with that sweet babe warm on your chest." You are not alone mama.
