We will soon face off with Gavin Newsom at oral argument before the Court of Appeal. When we meet in court, one thing will likely be different: the Governor is ...about to lose his lawyer. Xavier Becerra was appointed Attorney General by Jerry Brown in 2017 when Kamala Harris left the post to become a Senator. Becerra spent the next four years suing the President 110 times at a cost of $41 million to taxpayers. For some reason, Joe Biden thought this was a good resume for a Health and Human Services Secretary. If Becerra is confirmed and joins Biden’s cabinet, Newsom will make yet another appointment to replace him as Attorney General. Speaking of Becerra, I got a remarkable letter from him yesterday. He is refusing to issue the opinion I asked for on the validity of Newsom’s appointment of Alex Padilla to the U.S. Senate, even though he’s legally required to. So the Attorney General is violating the law in order to avoid saying the Governor is violating the law. Welcome to the Banana Republic of California.

Only in California would a vote of the people be considered a coup. Yesterday, Newsom's top allies held a press conference to oppose the Recall titled, Defendi...ng against the California Coup. Here’s how CalMatters began its story on the event: When is a constitutionally outlined petition campaign to remove an elected leader actually a ‘treasonous’ effort to subvert the democratic process. According to the California Democratic Party, when Republicans are on one side of the campaign and Gov. Gavin Newsom is on the other. It’s hard to imagine a greater sign of desperation. As Politico’s California reporter noted, This press conference does not happen unless Gavin Newsom is seriously worried about the recall effort. Observers of all political affiliations blasted the stunt, once again showing Newsom’s wonderful ability to bring people together - in opposition to him.
