TIPS OF THE DAY: Maximizing The Benefits Of Your Dental Team The new dentistry brings together a unique complement of skills, knowledge, and capabilities with one primary focus: ensuring your dental health care. Working as a team, your dentist and the dental finance team he or she has assembled wants to recruit you to join them in making sure this focus is maintained. The dental team has two major parts that you may hear referenced during your visits: the "back" and the "fron...t." These terms refer to two very specific functions of your dental team. The front office handles all the administration, scheduling, and dental financing, and the back office provides the treatment. Your front office team makes sure you know about scheduling opportunities, handles dental finance, and keeps the administrative details under control to provide you efficient services and support. The back office team is thus free to do what they do best: provide the best dental health care, financing health care and service for you. You'll find the dentist, dental hygienist, and dental assistant ready to assist you during your appointments. The key component for success of any team is each member's commitment to do their part. As a consumer and team member, your commitment involves three things: Maintaining your commitment to your dental health through regular hygiene appointments and the daily practice of flossing and brushing. Asking questions and getting the essential information you need about your teeth and gums or to understand any treatment plans or dental financing. Staying open to options and opportunities that the new dentistry offers you by thinking about the information and feedback that your dentist provides you about the status of your dental health. You can maximize the benefits of the skills and expertise of your dental finance team by deciding for yourself what kind of relationship you want with your dentist and the dental team and how they can help you achieve a positive outcome for your dental future. TIPS OF THE DAY: Dental Anxiety Is Real! Franklin D. Roosevelt was right: the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Many times, the worst part of a procedure is the anxiety a patient endures before even climbing into the chair. It's a problem that's preventable, and your dentist would like to help you with that right now.... If you (or someone you care about) has an appointment that's beginning to darken your thoughts, try this: First focus on the specifics of your dental fear. Is it the procedure in general, or a particular piece of equipment, or a vague sense of invasion of the privacy of your mouth? Once you've got it pinned down, talk with your dentist about it. If it's general dental anxiety, your dentist can help you feel better. If it's concern over a specific instrument or technique, often your dentist can change the way he does things. You can help the "pre-op jitters" by avoiding stimulants (coffee, cocoa, sugar) six hours before your visit. And concentrate on breathing naturally; denying yourself oxygen increases anxiety. Finally, there's a matter of trust. When your dentist describes a procedure, ask him to be honest. Ask him to tell you if it will be uncomfortable or stressful, if he tells you it won't be, believe him. And spare yourself the unnecessary burden of dental phobia. TIPS OF THE DAY: Periodontal Disease As A Risk Factor For Systemic Disease It is well known that periodontal (gum) diseases are a series of bacterial infections that destroy the gum tissue and bone that support the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss. What is commonly not thought of is how this oral infection can also affect the rest of the body. An infection in the mouth can affect the overall health and have serious systemic (general body) mani...Continue reading

TIPS OF THE DAY: Laser Gum Treatment of Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease is a leading cause of adult tooth loss in the U.S. today. It can progress destructively, often unnoticed, just like undiagnosed hypertension or diabetes. What if a magic wand or automatic treatment upgrade made a new gum disease treatment available, allowing your periodontist to provide more successful care? A treatment that would eliminate the need for periodontal surgery? What if that care could... be provided comfortably and what if it was more easily affordable? Periodontal procedures like that actually exist today. One is called the dental laser. The laser is an instrument that uses the energy provided from a focused beam of light to very selectively and gently remove delicate infected gum tissue. In the process, the laser's focused beam of light effectively seals off tiny blood vessels (so no bleeding gums!) and nerve endings while instantly stimulating healing. The bacteria causing the infection are actually vaporized! The dental laser is extremely safe. Protective eyewear represents the chief safety precaution. Healing is very rapid and uneventful. Secondary infection is nonexistent. There are no dressings to wear or any open wounds. The laser can be used most often with nothing more than topical anesthesia and never more than local anesthesia. Today in dentistry, a laser is simply the source of a focused beam of light, but maybe it's really actually more of a high tech magic wand. Ask your dentist about laser gum treatment of periodontal disease today! For more information or to make an appointment, call LaJolla Periodontics today at (855) 563-7049. Lajolla Periodontics 09.02.2021

TIPS OF THE DAY: Periodontal Disease, The Leading Cause Of Tooth Loss In Adults Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection. Without proper dental care the bacteria that are present in plaque can infect the gums (gingivitis) and destroy the bone and tissues that support the teeth in what is called periodontitis-- the leading cause of tooth loss and bad breath (halitosis) in adults. In addition, gum disease has been linked to more serious health threats such as diabetes, car...diovascular disease, respiratory disease, and pre-term, low-birthweight babies. Is periodontal disease contagious? Can it be passed from one person to another like tuberculosis or meningitis? Can you get periodontal disease by kissing someone who has it? The answer to all these questions is YES. In a dental care article published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, it was revealed that periodontitis might be passed from parents to children and between intimate partners. The bacteria that inhabit the periodontal pockets are also present on the oral soft tissues, teeth, tongue and saliva. They can be transferred from one person to another through saliva, intimate kissing, sharing of food, utensils, or toothbrushes, and can result in exposure to saliva that contain the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Based on these findings and the fact that periodontal disease has a genetic component, it is recommended that if one family member has periodontitis, all family members see a dental care professional or periodontist for a periodontal screening. Parents need to know that gum disease and halitosis are not just adult health problems and that children can also be affected. To prevent transmission of periodontitis between family members or intimate partners, it is important to follow proper dental care and oral hygiene techniques that include daily brushing and flossing and to see a dental care provider routinely for professional cleanings and examinations. TIPS OF THE DAY: Dental Insurance, What Should You Know Dental insurance is not meant to be a pay-all. It's only meant to be an aid. You are very fortunate if you have dental insurance coverage and don't have to pay the entire dental fee plan out of your own pocket. Many patients don't have any dental insurance at all. Some patients have excellent dental insurance policies or dental credit, some have fair policies, and some have poor policies. Many plans tell you you'll be co...vered up to 80% - 100%. In spite of what you're told, most plans cover only 15% - 70% of the average dental fee plan. We realize that every bit of help you get from your insurance company is a big help, and we are glad you have coverage. However, it must be understood that how much your policy covers has already been determined by how much your employer paid for your insurance policy. The less he/she paid for the insurance, the less you'll receive. FOR EXAMPLE: PLAN Costs a lot of money Costs 1/2 the amount Deductible is $50.00 Deductible is $100.00 Pays $84.00 on a filling Pays $35.00 on a filling Yearly maximum is $1,000 Yearly maximum is $800 It has been the experience of many dentists that some insurance companies tell their customers that "fees are above the usual and customary" rather than saying "our benefits are low." Your insurance company sets the "allowables" or "a usual and customary dental fee plan" depending on how much your employer paid for your policy. It's just like your car insurance. The lower the benefits you choose, the less it costs you in premiums. Many necessary routine dentistry services are not covered by dental insurance at all. Again, what is covered and what is not is determined by what benefits and dental payment plan your employer purchased for you. We do not believe it is in your best interest for your treatment to be compromised in order to accommodate an insurance policy's restrictions that may provide you with a quality of care that is considerably less than you deserve. We strongly feel that you, not your insurance company, should choose the treatment you feel is best for you. TIPS OF THE DAY: Dental Patient Financing Your dentist's biggest concern is your dental health. Teeth are a priceless possession. Maintaining them should never have to take a back seat to details like dental costs or insurance coverage. Your dentist's patient financing policy is probably pretty basic: somehow, they'll find a way that lets them perform the work you need now, rather than put it off for money reasons. Simply put, they're there to help.... As a patient, you should receive a proposed treatment plan that's right for you. You should also receive a complete description of what's needed and a dental fees estimate - so you know what, when, and how much - right from the start. If you're covered by dental insurance, your dentist's staff will work to obtain the maximum benefit your plan allows. They may even elect to spread your treatment over two "insurance years" to expand your coverage. Every plan and patient, of course, is different. If you're not covered by insurance your dentist can still find a way to get you the dental work you need done. Credit cards, a dental loan, and monthly payments are all dental financing options you can explore in tailoring a program that fits your dental needs. Your dentist realizes that dental costs will always play a part in the decisions you make together. But cost alone should never prevent you from seeking the dentistry you need early on, before the problem gets worse - and more expensive For more information or to make an appointment, call LaJolla Periodontics today at (855) 563-7049. TIPS OF THE DAY: Revealing Endodontic Disease Symptoms If you’re worried that you might be suffering from endodontic (root canal) disease, Dr. Gary Sigafoos wants you to know that catching endodontic disease early is extremely important to your dental health. Plus, it makes any root canal procedure you might need much less invasive and less )! Although there’s no one textbook case of endodontic disease because of the wide variety and combination of symptoms that may manifes...t from person to person, there are a few questions that Dr. Sigafoos would like you to ask yourself: Do I experience lingering tooth sensitivity to cold liquids? Do I notice lingering tooth sensitivity to hot liquids? Do I experience tooth sensitivity when eating sweets? Does the pressure from biting give me pain? Do I have pain that starts in my tooth but moves on to another area, such as the ear, temple, or neck? Do I seem to have just random spontaneous toothaches, even just when sitting quietly like when watching TV or reading a magazine? Do I have constant or intermittent tooth (or tooth-associated) pain? Is my tooth (or tooth-associated) pain severe? Do I experience throbbing tooth (or tooth-associated) pain? Does my pain get worse when I’m undergoing atmospheric pressure changes, such as when I’m flying or scuba diving? Does my pain worsen anytime I change my posture, like when I go from a standing to reclining position? Do I notice any swelling around my tooth or anywhere else in face? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Dr. Sigafoos would really like to meet with you in order to save your natural tooth and improve your overall health. You may also be suffering from decay, periodontal disease, cracked teeth, defective fillings, or other tooth- or bite-related problems. Your discomfort may even be caused by a disorder unrelated to your teeth. Dr. Sigafoos should be the first name on your call list when symptoms such as these arise. Just direct any questions to him through LaJolla Periodontics at (855) 563-7049. You can also complete the online form to make an appointment with him. The sooner you’re diagnosed, the better! TIPS OF THE DAY: How About Orthodontic Coverage? Not all dental insurance plans cover braces and other orthodontic work; orthodontic coverage is often separate from overall dental coverage. If you or your child will want or need orthodontia, this sort of coverage can save you a lot of money. Without insurance, teen braces can be expensive. (The average cost of braces treatment tends to be about $5,000.) You can call your insurance company to see if your plan covers orthodonti...c treatment, and if so, how much they will pay for. If your insurer does not cover braces, you may be able to purchase an orthodontic benefits plan separately.
