Team Philippines is where it’s at, y’all! Having first formed in 2014, Team Philippines brought skaters with Filipino heritage together from all around the globe to compete at an international level. While the cost-intensive nature of the sport tends to make roller derby less accessible in developing nations like the Philippines, this team has made sure that the Philippines is still being repped in the roller derby world with fierceness and pride. And guess what? Our very ow...n Jägerbomb and STEFCON 1 are OG members. Which makes sense because they’re two of the baddest Filipinas around. With Jäger and STEFCON’s help, Team Philippines finished 17th out of 38 at the 2018 Roller Derby World Cup, with one of STEFCON’s most memorable moments being when she was selected to carry the Philippines flag at the closing ceremony. We’ve also heard tell of the Team Philippines’ logo and matching tattoos. Be sure to ask Jäger and STEFCON about that one! Well hello there, National Roller Skating Month! How kickass to see you! Since we can’t celebrate at Dollhalla, we hope all of our skaters have tightened their outdoor wheels and are proving that they’re just as merciless on concrete and asphalt as they are on the track! Thanks Vance Malone for all your work on these clips! ... And for those of you who’d like to see all six of them, visit the Adult and Jrs LADD social media on FB, Instagram, and Twitter. #nationalrollerskatingmonth #rollon #derby #keeprolling #october #vancemalone #skaters #rollerderby

In continuation of our celebration of Latinx Heritage Month, check out & support your local bookstore.....Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore!! Believing that it is also everyone’s right to explore and develop their innate creative gifts, Tia Chucha’s founders set out to correct the historic absence of life-enhancing artistic and literary options for this sector of the population. Melding vision with conviction, Tia Chucha’s was created as a space to embrace the equally ...important artistic development of our lives as human beings. Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore began as a café, bookstore and cultural space owned and run by Los Angeles Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez, his wife Trini, and their brother-in-law Enrique Sanchez. In 2003 Luis, along with singer/musicologist Angelica Loa Perez and Xicano Rap artist Victor Mendoza established a next-door sister nonprofit to incorporate a full range of arts workshops. When in 2007 the cultural café and bookstore disbanded as an LLC, it donated its assets, including inventory, shelves, equipment, and more to the nonprofit to carry its mission forward. Tia Chucha’s cultural center now provides year-round on-site and off-site free or low-cost arts and literacy bilingual intergenerational programming in mural painting, music, dance, writing, visual arts, healing arts sessions (such as reiki healing) and healing/talking circles. Be sure to check out all their upcoming virtual events and their Black & Latino Men Read Essay Contest. https://www.tiachucha.org/

As a quad skater with over 2 million TikTok followers, Ana Coto has become one of the most influential people in the mainstream resurgence of roller skating. Although roller skating has been a decades-long form of art, leisure, and expression, especially in Black communities, the onset of COVID-19 has found greater numbers of people looking to quads as a form of exercise, stress relief, and creativity. Ana will be the first to tell you that she’s far from the only artistic s...kater sharing on social media, but she’s managed to capture the pure joy and freedom of skating in a way that’s infectious and that has in a short time gained astounding popularity. As Latinx Heritage Month continues, we’re excited to give this Latina a heartfelt shout out as well as the people she’s inspired to break in new skates! You can see Ana skate @anaocto on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, or check out her website, www.anacoto.com. #anaocto #anacoto #danceskater #bipocskater #latinxheritage #latinxheritagemonth #keeprolling #skateinthetimeofcovid #strutlikeastar #latinaskater #influencer

It’s Native American Day, so of course we had to tell you about Daisy Purdy, a Cherokee woman who recently roller skated 2000 miles to raise money and awareness for Mesas to Mountains: Rollin’ for Rock’s Research. Mesas2Mountains, aka Roller Rock, is a movement to raise awareness and funds for the continued study of the effects environmental pollution has had on the Navajo Nation and the heightened spread of COVID-19 among those communities. As a former derby skater, Daisy su...rvived gravel, debris, and the blistering summer heat to skate from the Navajo Nation in Arizona to the Eastern Band Cherokee Nation in North Carolina. Daisy’s epic journey lasted from June 11th to August 8th and raised an impressive $20,000, but her fight is far from done. Visit RollerRock.org to find out more or to sign up for your own solidarity skate. @Mesas2Mountains on FB or Instagram. And of course, www.gofundme.com/f/roll-for-rock-research to donate. #bipocskater #mesas2mountains #rollerskating #navajonation #rollingforrocksresearch #crosscountry #crosscountryskate #cherokeeskater #ontheroad #goodcause #nativeamericanday #daisypurdyrocks #crazyforagoodcause

If you thought cool Latina skate crews were strictly an LA thing, it’s only because you haven’t yet met the Bubblegum Rollergirls. What began as like-minded street skaters on the hunt for adventure and asphalt, has become a collective of OC rollergirls making themselves known through art, photography, video, and of course, badass quad skating. When you’re a Bubblegum Rollergirl, You have to look at the world a little differently and open yourself up to new skate possibilit...ies. (And of course, give the local skateboard crews a serious run for their money!) Head on over to Instagram to see the world through Bubblegum Rollergirl eyes, visit their Etsy shop for merch, and check out their YouTube channel for fun skate videos. LADD Skater Dolores Muerta on why she chose her skate name "This sport is about strong fearless women and Dolores Huerta is someone I admire very much. She is an important figure in our community and an advocate for our farmworkers, women's rights, and immigrants. I wanted to bring light to her name in a sport that might not have known about her. I’m proud to be a strong Chicana because of people like her. Despite my adversities, I’m still here standing strong and proud, and ...in her words, 'Si Se Puede!'. Words to live by." Muerta wears many hats - she's a proud mama, a skater, a businesswoman, and a makeup artist. As part of our LADD Glam Squad she helps skaters create bout looks for their bouts. She also runs a mask making business helping to keep her friends and family safe (and stylish) during the pandemic. Check it out at projectrangel.com

Meet S.A.D. Girl Skates, a Latina skate crew bringing their quad excellence to the streets of the South Bay. Despite an abundance of cool skate parks in the area, most of the quad meetups were happening in Long Beach and LA. That is until the S.A.D. Girls rolled through. Like all things great, S.A.D. Girls started small with each new meetup designed to create space for themselves and all those who love to skate. Now S.A.D. Girl Skates is growing and growing, and a welcome ad...dition to the LA County skate community. If you’re ever in the South Bay and looking to rollout, make sure you check out @s.a.d.girlskates Instagram and see what they’re up to! Oh, and guess what? They’ve got cool merch too. https://sadgirlskates.bigcartel.com/ SAD Girlskate #latinxheritage #latinheritage #latinxheritagemonth #bipocskaters #latinasonquads #skatecrew #sadgirlskates #latinaskaters #shreddingnenas #skateanddie #southbay #latinaskater

Today kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15-10/15) honoring the cultures and contributions of Latinx folx. We'll be using our platform to highlight our Latinx community both within the skatesphere and locally. Check out today's Google Doodle honoring Felicitas Mendez, who fought school segregation of Mexican-American children at an all white school. In 1946 it was ruled that school districts were violating Mexican American citizens' rights, paving the way for the landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954! For more fun facts, go to https://hispanicheritagemonth.gov/ to see tributes to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.
